Rants | Anti-Black Friday

(photo via Somecards)

I kind of have a small problem with Black Friday...other than the fact that I had to work at Old Navy one year on Black Friday morning and there were never ending lines of slightly rude and pushy people who were either looking for something or waiting to be checked out at the register so they could leave the store. Let me just say that it was a TON of work and not really enjoyable...I pity any person who has to work on Black Friday, especially during the morning rush (like I had to) and has to deal with the pushy people. On top of that...we JUST celebrated Thanksgiving guys!! Hello! Does anyone else have a problem with this? I will admit I've gone Black Friday shopping...twice...but I don't think the sales were worth the crowds of people or waiting in lines for hours to leave that store just to wait in another equally long line at another store. Regardless...I am not shopping this Black Friday, and don't plan to shop any time in the near future on Black Friday.

  1. Agreed! I've never had a work a Black Friday, but I also don't shop that day. The woman with pepper spray at Walmart last year was about 10 miles from us - crazy! We usually spend the day doing some outdoor activity like hiking or riding our bikes - gotta work off that pumpkin pie!

  2. I completely agree! I have worked retail on two Black Fridays and will probably be doing so this year. The sales are not worth it, in my opinion. There is a mall here in South Carolina where you can wait three hours just to get a space in the parking lot.
That e-card makes a great point - funny how people act so materialistic after they were just claiming to be "thankful" the day before.

    1. Oh I know!! Poor think! I will pray your day won't be too awful! :) Lol yes, I laughed when I saw this card. Sad as it is, many people really are like this. I know that on some occasions when I spent Thanksgiving with some family members all they talked about is where they were going to shop the next day and what they were going to get. Very little time was actually spent focusing on being thankful for what they already had.

  3. Sadly I think the day after Thanksgiving shopping has become a huge sales gimmick. Nowadays it's all about electronics and people sleeping outside the stores before they open. Nope, I really don't think it is worth it.

  4. We had a family friend who was a manager of a clothing store. We invited him to Thanksgiving every year, and every year he turned us down because he had to be up so early the net day for Black Friday. So it really can put a damper on the holiday for people who have to work. Anyways, I agree with your rant.

    1. Oh wow that's awful! Usually the managers traded out at least so that different one's were there each year or different people were there for different holidays. That would really be awful to not be able to celebrate Thanksgiving with anyone because of that though! :(

  5. I completely agree! Stores are actually opening ON Thanksgiving now. Walmart, Target, ToysR'Us, CVS, Rite Aid, Kmart, Bass Pro Shops, The Gap, Micheal's, Safeway, Savemart, Banana Republic, The Gap Outlet, Old Navy, Sears, The Disney Store, Lane Bryant, Sony, Starbucks, Subway, Victoria's Secret, Ruby Tuesday, TGI Fridays & Old Town/Hometown Buffet, are just SOME of all the places open ON Thanksgiving day. Completely ridiculous!

I have worked on Thanksgiving, Christmas & New Years when I worked at the gas station... it blows!

    1. Oh yeah the year after my wreck is when Old Navy started being open on Thanksgiving...our store was only open for a few hours and NOBODY came in, but it was awful anyway...according to all my friends who still worked there and had to work instead of visiting with their families.

  7. I already have everything I need for myself and most of my holiday gifts for others. I like the IDEA of the thrill of Black Friday but I don't have the energy for it!

  8. That's so interesting. We don't have Black Friday here in Canada so this is all new. It seems pretty exhausting though. Hope your Thanksgiving was awesome!

    1. I am having a wonderful Thanksgiving! :) Consider yourself(ves) blessed!! Black Friday is really hard on a lot of people, and if you followed the link to the video you can see how it turns some people into raging animals.
