The Confessor's White Dress Post #3 Adding The Hood

Well, as you saw earlier today I got the sleeves attached nicely to my Confessor dress! I am SO pleased with how they turned out! I know they don't look exactly like the ones in the pictures, but they are the best I could come up with and I'm quite proud of them!

Since them I have been able to add in the hood and the lining in the back of the dress (in the top part only so far). The hood was very difficult. Not only did it take me forever to figure out how to get it started, but every time I thought I got to where I could get the thing attached I had to make some dramatic change which would then add a whole bunch of time onto the project. Needless to say...I am grateful to have a model (my little sister) who was patient and willing to stand still while I played with the fabric and made snips and pinned pieces until I finally got something that worked for the most part...as you will learn more about in the pictures...

Here is the latest look of the dress!!!
You will notice a huge difference between the waist line and below that...this is because the top part now has lining in it! YAY! The lining for the bottom part is cut and ready to go tomorrow as soon as I can get to it.

Although this pic is blurry you can see how big the two pieces of fabric were that I used to make the outer part of the hood. The two pieces were attached separately to the front pieces of the dress and then sewn around toward the back where they were connected and sewn together to create a 'hood' of sorts which is shown in the next few pictures.
Here Lyd is modeling in the dress.

Here is a front view of the 'hood' in its first version. It had been attached only around the bottom. The top is just placed over the head.

Side view of the hood which was not attached anywhere except around the bottom.

Back view of the hood with nothing attached except the very bottom.

Here is where I cut off the excess fabric and discovered that I had no clue what I was doing.
Thank goodness that cutting things sometimes does have a good ending!

I had my 'model' take off the dress and I unpinned the hood. I trimmed the curved piece you see there and then did a little sewing to make it not as pointed as it is seen on the left. This would become a collar of sorts which the hood would attach to.

And it turned into a beautiful collar I must say! If I was making a simple dress without a hood at some other point I would totally do this again!! I love the look and it was really easy! (of course I would put the seam underneath instead of on top, but this was done because I am attaching the hood to it...)
I began pinning and then sewing the hood to the collar. I did realize that there was a good amount of 'extra fabric so I just lined up the center of the fabric with the center of the back of the collar and left space to work with it after I had the majority of the collar secured.

I didn't realize just HOW big of a gaping hole I had in the back of my hood until after it was already attached...I decided to do a gathered stitch to take in all that extra fabric without adding a ton of extra work for myself.

I think it turned out pretty well. Don't you?

As for the lining? That will have to wait for another time since I've only added a little piece of it. I have most of the pieces cut for the skirt part of the lining. I want to do separate pieces which are gathered at the top and lose at the bottom so that they fit with the waist and hem of the design I already have going on. I really love the way this dress looks! It is coming along so well! I have a ton of little detail things I want to add to it, but they will be after the majority of the work is already done.

The important things that are left is to finish the hood (I need to add lining and finish around the front edge), do the lacing for the front of the dress (I already know how I want to do it, I just have to make it), make the lining for the skirt and front of the dress (the pieces are cut for the skirt part!), and hem the bottom of the dress. These are the basic things to the dress itself. There are the details such as adding the gold trim around each arm just before the long sleeves start which I will do at the very last once everything else that is important is done! :) I am so excited! I've never sewn a dress before, much less sleeves or a hood so this has been a very interesting experience! Especially since I've had to create everything with no pattern at all!

The Confessor's White Dress Post #2 Adding The Sleeves

Yesterday I gave Sneak Peek of my Confessor dress and how it was coming along. I usually do posts long after the project is completed, but this one is so different and exciting that I just can't hold it in until it's done!!!

Today I've managed to add on both of the sleeves. I hope to add the hood later on this evening, but for now the only change in the dress is that it is no longer sleeveless! I have to say that it feels very awesome wearing this dress! :)

I had to make pieces of fabric big enough to cover the arm hole I had made in the beginning.

Once the sleeves were attached at the arm pit area I was able to slim them down to give them a fitted look.

I added one sleeve at a time. I think it kind of makes me look armless...

Now I have two sleeves!!!

The next part I am going to work on is the hood. Once that is complete I will be able to finish the front of the dress and then the outer layer (this part of the dress you see now) will be done. All I will have left is all the under layers to piece together and sew. Those will be much easier to do!

This photo shows the general idea of what look I was going for when I created the sleeves:

Yard Sale Finds | October 17, 2012

I happened upon a good size yard sale one day a few weeks ago and made some more great finds! Of course the majority of what I shop for is to stock up on things I will need when I get married. I have a lot already so I just find the little bits I don't have or the extras which are nice to have more of. Here are the finds from October 17th:

A white serving bowl. I'm doing a mix of all white dishes so this fits in perfectly!
I think it was .50 cents.

A queen size Sealy flat sheet.
.50 cents.

A nice peeler.
.25 cents.

I collect small little dishes like these to put pins or odd little things in. I keep them on my book case in my room.
.25 cents.

A navy blue 'grandma' sweater for refashioning.
.25 cents.

Measuring cups. My mom has these and I love them! 1 cup, 1/2 cup, 1/4 cup...the ones I use the most!
.25 cents.

I am very pleased with these finds!

Sneak Peek | Confessor's White Dress

Yesterday afternoon I had some free time so I started working on the white dress Bridget Regan wears in the show The Legend of the Seeker. I fell in love with the dress the first time I saw it on the poster and knew immediately what all those white sheets I'd been saving would be used for! I've had to make up everything as I go so it's one of those odd things I probably won't be able to recreate twice, but that's okay...I just want one! :)

I am really quite pleased with how well the back of the dress is turning out! It is almost done. I think I have one last little alteration to make to it and then over all it should be finished other than the hem at the bottom and the hem at the top where the hood attaches.

When I was studying her dress I discovered that there are a TON of layers to it!!! She has about five white layers as best as I can tell, and then there are two black layers under that. I only have enough white fabric from old sheets I've collected from yard sales and such to make two of those layers, but that should do. As for the black layers I have the perfect skirt that I plan to wear underneath my dress along with the black leggings and black boots I also have.

I am still unsure as to what the finished dress will look like. I've been focusing on getting the thing to a piece that can be slipped on so that I don't have to have my sister as a model anymore...well, maybe. I will say that this is an interesting project. It feels kind of medieval. Lyd said how it would be interesting and fun to wear to a medieval fair sometime since it fits that theme. I just might. :)

Here are a few sneak peek photos for you! The back of the dress is coming along quite well, the front, however, still requires a lot of attention...and you will notice that the sleeves and hood are still absent as I still have to figure out how to make and attach each of those.

The front of the dress...still SO much to do!!

The back of the dress before I had the front and back attached in dress form.

The dress from the back. Notice my pink cozy socks? :) The back is almost done. I just need to add sleeves and the hood.

I plan to keep working on this dress as I can. I am sad to say that I won't be posting a tutorial for this project, but I might post my notes once I get it completely done!

Oh...and here is the original:

STILL SO MUCH TO DO!!!

Monthly: Top 5 Blogging Tips #2

Welcome to the second collection of blogging tips! In case you missed my post from last month here is a quick review of the topics covered: Create your own favicon, create a blog button, bloggers photo limit and how to fix it, add the "Pin It" button, join Bloglovin'. (I'm on Bloglovin' too!!)

This month I started up a lot of different posts for the Blogging Tips topic, but was only able to finish one of them...and that one is listed below at #3!

Tip #1 Have the Follow via Email Option!
This is SO easy to add to your blog! I know that when I'm looking at a new blog I ALWAYS search for an email box so that I can follow that way and keep up with the latest posts. This is the best way to gain new readers and I highly recommend it. In Blogger go to Layout and click "add a gadget" scroll down and add "follow by email". There you go! All set! Easy as that.

Tip #2 Sippy Cups & Pearls: Blogging For Newbies: Fixing The Annoyances!
This is a wonderful blog which I have been following for quite some time via email and just yesterday I saw where she was starting up her own series of tips for new bloggers! I really wanted to share this first post because she shares with you how to fix the No Reply Blogger problem (which can be a HUGE deal in the blogging world!!) and she also talks about turning off the annoying word verification. I have the word verification off on my blog BUT I always monitor each comment that is left so no comment is published on my blog unless I publish it. This way no spam will ever end up on any of my posts.

Tip #3 Prewrite Posts & Schedule Them To Publish Automatically!
Earlier this month I was in the middle of writing a blog post when, quite by accident, I discovered how to schedule posts to publish automatically. This has become a lifesaver and time saver and been a great way for me to participate in more challenges since I can prewrite so many things and schedule them to come out on the days they need to be published! This is a must read for busy bloggers!

Tip #4 DONT post as Anonymous!!
This is SO huge in the blogging world! If you are a fellow blogger, then there is absolutely NO reason for you to post as such, but many people may try to leave comments on my blog because they don't realize it's so easy to leave a comment with their name included! View this short post so you can easily explain to your readers (or your grandma!) so that you will have fewer comments from "anonymous" on your blog!

Tip #5 Center Those Sponsor Buttons!
There is nothing more distracting than a messy sidebar! Get all those buttons in line by centering them! It's SO easy and only takes a few minutes per button. Plus, if you keep up with it for every new button you add you won't have a ton of work to do later on down the road when you have a ton of Blog Hops or Parties you attend stuck on your side bars! Even if you put these on a separate page on your blog you should STILL center them!!! People are always looking at your blog and you should present a nice clean and tidy space so that it's easy to follow, this one thing helps a TON!

Verse A Day October Challenge | Days 21-29

Wow I got 8 days behind...not one bit good. Well, I have tried to keep up. I will admit I haven't done my best with this challenge...

Day 21: Calm
I like the story of when Jesus and the disciples were out on the water and Jesus fell asleep and a storm came. The disciples were terrified and woke Jesus to rescue them. Read what he said:

Mark 4:39 KJV: "And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm."

Day 22: In Your Town
I wasn't quite sure what to do with this so I just Googled the words "town kjv" and several verses came up. One really jumped out at me more than the others though because it had such a strong message and I felt I should pass it along with you:

Habakkuk 2:12-14 KJV: "12-Woe to him that buildeth a town with blood, and stabisheth a city by iniquity! 13-Behold, is it not of the Lord of hosts that the people shall labour in the very fire, and the people shall weary themselves for very vanity? 14-For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea."

Day 23: The View From Here
The very first thing that popped to mind was when God told Abraham (Abram at the time) what land would be given to his children and the generations following after him.

Genesis 13:14-15 KJV: "14-And the Lord said unto Abram, after that Lord was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward: 15-For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever."

Day 24: Weather
I do believe that in Job, in first chapter, when his children are killed in the oldest brother's house by the 'great wind' that it is actually talking about a tornado...I think I remember hearing that from a Bible study, or something like that a few years ago. Anyway, it was weather related kind of and was the first thing I thought of on this topic. It's really a sad point to throw in with this collection of verse, but I can't really think of any other weather related verses at the moment.

Job 1:18-19 KJV: "18-While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house: 19-And, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee."

Day 25: People
I find this verse fitting since we have the vote for the President and many other leaders of our country coming up! Do you plan to vote?

Proverbs 29:2 KJV: "When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn."

Day 26: Listening To
Listening to the words of Jesus...

Luke 12:15 KJV: "And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth."

Day 27: Morning
One book of the Bible I've read a lot of through the years is Proverbs which is why I tend to lean toward pulling verses from those chapters as I am going to do right now. I always thought this was an interesting verse. I know that when my sisters were younger (and more sarcastic) conversations about this verse got quite interesting!

Proverbs 27:14 KJV: He that blesseth his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, it shall be counted a curse to him."

Day 28: Looking Back
Although I'm sure this probably is meaning more looking back on time, the story that comes to mind is when Lot's wife looks back at the destruction of Sodom & Gomorrah and is turned into a pillar of salt as the angels had warned would happen to anyone who looked back.

Genesis 19:26 KJV: "But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt."

Day 29: Moon
I think my favorite book of the Bible is Acts. I read it a lot... One verse I've seen several times talks about the sun and the moon just before the return of Jesus:

Acts 2:20-21 KJV: "20-The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come: 21-And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved."

In Closing For Today
I know I've done a really awful job on this challenge this month, I'm hoping to do something similar next month so that I can get into the habit so it won't be so hard for me. I really do like finding verses this way! Plus there are so many different photo challenges and other challenges I could use! :) Until the next post...

Hello Fall/Autumn Coffee Talk Tag

(photo via Beauty Blogs & More)

Southern Glamourista is a new blog I have been following recently via email...a few days ago this list of questions popped into my email box with all her answers and I loved them! I was so excited when I got to the end of the post and saw where she had tagged ALL of her readers because I REALLY wanted to answer these questions myself...so, without further delay, let us start!

1. It's finally Fall/Autumn what are you most looking forward to this season?
Oh my goodness!! This is so hard because Fall is one of my favorite times of the year...I love the fact that I can layer my wardrobe, but those questions come later so...the food is second specifically on Thanksgiving day, but Fall food in general is AWESOME! Apple Pies, Apple Butter, Button-Up Chili, Apple Pecan Cake, Caramel Popcorn, Baked Potato Soup, Hot Chocolate, Cinnamon Rolls (a Thanksgiving morning tradition at our house!)...yum!!!

2. What Fall item in your closet are you most excited to pull out?
My sweaters!!! I have SO many of them! I just got most of them out yesterday, but I pulled many of them out a few weeks ago because I was so ready to wear them. I am also excited to have my crochet/sweater boots out and my scarves! Two things I also have a good bit of!

3. Since Halloween is the first holiday to celebrate we all get treated with a horror movie marathon all month long... What is your favorite scary movie to watch?
Actually...I REALLY hate scary movies and I NEVER watch horror films. Instead I plan to watch It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown with the family which is sort of tradition around this time of year for us...and is also one of the things I have on my Fall 2012 Bucket List. (I will admit this is the one question I was not excited to answer.)

4. What's your favorite fall treat?
I have to agree with Amanda (at Southern Glamourista) I love pumpkin foods too! Pumpkin pie is my top favorite...I LOVE Pumpkin Pie pop tarts, Pumpkin Bread is awesome, and later this week or next week I hope to try a Pumpkin Spice Latte for the VERY FIRST TIME!!! SO excited! (Another thing on my Fall Bucket List lol.) I also like Pumpkin cookies, and Pumpkin cake...basically anything with pumpkin in it!

5. Now that Summer is finally over, what will you miss about it?
I will miss the warm weather! Since relocating I have come to realize that I am not used to this new weather pattern and that will take some getting used to! I am not preparred for the weather to be so cold already!!

6. What Makeup/Beauty Products do you like for Fall?
Since I don't wear make up that will just leave beauty products...I hope to try some new experiments in the DIY beauty department (if you follow my blog often you know this is normal and usually turns out very well). I plan to research the uses of oatmeal for use on skin and in/on your hair and then try some experiments there which I will be blogging about when they are completed. I am in the middle of an experiment with apple cider vinegar as a facial toner, so far the results seem to be going in a positive direction...I should be writing a detailed post about that soon!

7. What have you recently bought in preparation for the upcoming season?
Honestly I've only bought two things...and they were both found at a thrift store! Surprise, surprise!! Lol. One is an extremely large men's sweater which I plan to refashion into a comfy fall/winter skirt for me, and the other was an American Eagle Scarf I happened across as I was about to head to the check-out line! :) (Both of those will be coming up in a post soon...I've been very busy lately so I'm a bit behind in a lot of my posts)

8. Have you been Trick or Treating?
Actually that is coming up this Wednesday and we were all talking about it at dinner tonight. Mom & Dad have decided that since we've never gone (that's a very long story for another time...) we could go this year...so the kids have been flying around trying to come up with something to be. Several things they came up with were: A librarian; a granny;  a runaway bride--using the dress I found at a yard sale see it here; a cowboy; a nerd; a toddler with pig tails in PJs holding a blanket & teddy bear... and a lot more! Basically, yes...we will be going out this year.

9. Name the first five things that come to your mind when you thing of Fall?
1) cooler weather; 2) bonfires; 3) leaves changing and falling off trees; 4) Thanksgiving; 5) sweaters & scarves

10. What is your favorite season and why?
Ooh...I have always said that Summer was my favorite season, but Fall has always been my second favorite. :) Summer will still remain my favorite, especially now that this place is so much colder than the last so I cannot enjoy the weather outside as much as I could back home. I love summer because you can swim, and go fishing and ride in trucks and there is no school (although I'm not in school anymore so this really doesn't affect any season now, yay!).

Now for those I tag with these questions....

Of course, if you want to join in you are MORE THAN WELCOME! Leave a comment so I can come by and read your answers too!!! Happy Fall!!

My Designs | Lace & Denim Striped Skirt

This is the only shot of the skirt that turned out well. The other sides the wind kept blowing the skirt and it looked funny. I'll try another shoot before I put up the tutorial!

Thank goodness I have finally got me a new denim skirt in my closet!! It's about time too since the last denim skirt I made was in May of this year (the Knee Length One). All my other skirts were made last fall and they're fine for everyday use, but I was ready for a change in wardrobe appearance and so I decided to whip up something new.

The jeans used for this skirt used for this skirt used to be worn by me many years ago. They were too long for me though, so I passed them along to mom. After a while (and after she lost a lot of weight) she gave them back to me... they were such an odd fabric so I was having a difficult time finding any other denim like material to match it. I couldn't really make another long skirt from these stretch Hydraulic jeans so I decided it was time to make a shorter skirt just using the one pair of jeans and going with that.

In the process of making the skirt I had the grand idea of adding lace between each layer. This was partly to add some length because I was worried it would end up too short. I love the lace because I can dress up the skirt so much more than if I had left it plain as I had originally planned on doing.

I do have lots of photos of the during process which I've saved on my computer to write up a tutorial for this skirt, but that will probably be a week or two before I can even think about working on it. I have too many other things going on right now and that is going to be a fairly detailed tutorial even though this was a pretty easy skirt to make.

Things I Heart | Butterflies

Awhile back (I think via the 10 Day YOU Challenge) I was talking with another blogger and was honestly quite surprised to learn that she was afraid of butterflies. Poor dear. I can't imagine having that fear. Butterflies are so delicate and small...I love them! They are beautiful, bright, and come in so many different colors and designs!!! Today I am going to share with you just a few of the many butterflies that I love!

All photos were found via Pinterest, if they linked elsewhere then those links will be listed under that photo.
