Share Your Holiday Desserts!

With the holidays of Thanksgiving & Christmas coming up I'd really like to promote the MultiBloggers: Desserts Board on Pinterest. As of right now there are 70+ pins of delicious and beautiful desserts. Many of them can be made for either holiday and there are quite a few Christmas ideas as well.

If you're a blogger and you have a dessert recipe to share, please send me an email with your Pinterest account URL enclosed so I can add you to the board and you can start sharing those recipes!

To share a Recipe:

1. It must be from your own blog.
2. You must share a link back to the direct post (so people can find it easily).
3. And of course it's always a good idea to follow the board so you don't miss other pins!

Simple as that!

I hope to hear from many of you soon!

Blogger Announcment | Promoting With Pinterest

Non-Blogger Readers you may want to go ahead and ignore this post since it's all blogger related things! Sorry!!

Everyone else, please read on!

Recently I was invited to join several different boards on Pinterest. Now at first I was reluctant to join them, but eventually I gave in and realized that group boards are a PERFECT way to promote your blog posts.! I've decided to give these multi-contributor boards a try.

First things first...you must be a blogger, and of course to be added as a contributor to a board I would like to be a reader of your blog! Now I've never done a group board of my own, but if this first one goes well then I'll create four more boards for a total of FIVE group boards on my account.

So the first board I am making will be all about desserts! If you're a blogger who shares or has shared a dessert recipe in the past now's your time to step up and promote it!
If you'd like to contribute to the board please EMAIL ME and I'll get you set up!
{p.s. in your email please let me know which email to use--if it's different--to add you as a contributor!}

Contributors:
-Will post/share ONLY dessert posts.
-Will link directly to the recipe post.
-Will put in the comment of the pin the name of the dessert and who it's by {Example: Edible Cookie Dough Bites. Recipe by Helen @ Blue Eyed Beauty Blog}
-Will follow the board.
-Will not post anything except for dessert posts. Anything else will be removed.

Approved Board Contributors

Custom Covers for Pinterest Boards!

While on my vacation from blogging I was able to work on a few things...one of those was creating the custom covers for my Pinterest boards! Awhile back I realized that Pinterest was automatically assigning a photo as the 'cover' for each of my boards...and although that really isn't a huge problem or anything, I really don't like the photos that are covers of my current boards. It just looks messy:

To fix the problem I was having I decided to use my beloved Picmonkey and create custom covers. I loaded up my famous dark denim background and cropped it... This I had to look up though, because I tried several different image sizes to see how they would load on my Pinterest board for the cover and most of them didn't work. A quick Google search landed me at web.search.social where I was able to find the exact size of the 'cover photo image' for Pinterest: 222x150. And I started making covers:

Board Cover!
So I cropped myself a little piece of denim and started working on the covers for each of the boards. This process actually took me quite awhile, but I think the end result was totally worth it. See below:

What do you think about the end result compared to the before?

If you've been to my Pinteret boards lately then you know I don't have all the covers updated to the 'new look', but I am working on it! Big changes like this do take time.

DIY Frozen Cookie Dough

So it seems I'm very much into posting things that have to do with the freezer lately, but this one is a really great idea which is Pinterest Inspired! Of course, lol. Where else do I find my inspirations?! :)

Items Needed
Uncooked Cookie Dough
Clean ice cube trays
A dinner knife

Directions
1. Make up the cookie dough. The recipe for the cookies used in these photos isn't posted yet...but I do have The Best Basic Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe which you can fancy up any way you desire or, for something less Christmassy you can try these recipes: Apple Oatmeal Spice Cookies, Flavorful Oatmeal Raisin Cookies, Pumpkin Oatmeal Raisin 'Cookie' Drops, Pumpkin Snickerdoodle Cookies, Soft Strawberry Cake Mix Cookies.

2. Bake the cookies you wish, or start scooping dough into each ice cube space.

3. Put the trays in the freezer for a few hours, or overnight to let the dough harden.

4. After they are hard, or the next day, use the dinner knife to pop the cookie dough cubes out of the trays and put them in an air tight container or ziploc bag. Store in the freezer until you're ready to use.

5. Follow the directions for the recipe you used to bake the cookies when you're ready to eat them!

This is a perfect way to avoid the Christmas rush, but still have fresh cookies on the day of or before Christmas! :)

Fluffy Pancakes

Only a few days ago I ran across a similar recipe to this one on Pinterest...but the amounts were much smaller so if you're looking to serve a few people instead of 8 or 10 you may want to head over to Cookin' Up North to get the ingredient amounts from her! If not...here is my version of the recipe which will feed a lot more and has a tad less sugar (once I tripled the recipe that is). Enjoy!

Makes about 38 pancakes.

Ingredients
4 cups flour
1 heaping Tablespoon baking powder
1 Tablespoon baking soda
1/2 cup sugar
3 eggs
4 cups milk
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, softened or melted

Directions
1. In a large bowl mix together all the ingredients, start with the dry ingredients first and then add the wet ingredients.
2. On a hot griddle or skillet cook the batter 1/4 cup at a time. On my griddle I could cook 6 cakes at the same time.
3. Serve hot with butter and syrup.

Cinnamon Muffins

I've had the hardest time coming up with a cinnamon roll muffin recipe, but that search is finally over! This recipe was inspired from several different recipes but I mainly used the recipes at Cookin' Up North and Six Sisters' Stuff. I added a lot of my own twists to it of course, but I loved them and so did everyone else!

This recipe makes 24 muffins!

Ingredients for Cake
4 cups of flour
1 cup sugar
1 heaping Tablespoon baking powder
1 Tablespoon cinnamon
1 Tablespoon vanilla flavor
1 teaspoon almond flavor
2 eggs
2 cups milk

Ingredients For Swirl
1 cup (2 sticks) butter
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup flour
2 Tablespoons cinnamon

Icing
2 Tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar

Directions
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
2. In a bowl mix together flour, sugar, baking powder, and cinnamon.
3. Make a low spot in the middle to add in the vanilla, almond, eggs, and milk.
4. In a microwave safe liquid measuring cup melt the butter until soft. Add brown sugar, flour, and cinnamon; mix together. This makes a creamy sauce instead of runny butter. Pour it into your dough and stir together.
5. Grease 24 muffin tins.
6. Using a 1/4 cup measuring cup dip the batter into the tins.
7. Bake the muffins for 20-25 minutes. You can stick a toothpick in the center to see if it's done.
8. While the muffins are baking go ahead and make up the icing. In a small microwave safe bowl melt the butter. Add in the cinnamon and powdered sugar. Using a spoon create a thick icing.
9. Once the muffins have baked use a spoon to spread a bit of icing across the top and then serve warm!

DIY Car Emergency Kit

I have been so busy with all my prepping for being an outdoor survivalist that I've let some things fall to the side...for example this project has been sitting on my desk since I got into the whole survivalist thing (read about that here!). I first saw this idea on Pinterest and then I found Martha Stewart's Martha Stewart's Car Trunk Organizer. There were a lot of great notes in the comments so I just started slowly building my list. I was having a really dificult time finding an actual blog post about the contents of the box instead of decorating the box itself....which was really starting to aggrivate me until today when I decided to give Pinterest one last shot (click the link to view my search results).

After Autry & I bought our first car I knew I needed to make us one of these boxes because half the time I didn't bring my purse with me and I was always needing something...and well, he's a guy so he wouldn't have something like, let's say: nail clippers. Out of desperation I finally told him I really needed to go to the store and pick up some things to finish up this project so I could put it in his car.

This box was made for two people in their 20's so as you are preparing your own list for you and your family with two small kids, keep in mind you'll want to add a few extra things like baby wipes or diapers, change of clothes, you know what your kids need. :)

Here are the items we included in our Car Emergency Box. Take what you need, and leave what you don't! Feel free to leave comments with your ideas of what you've added to your boxes since I'm always looking for something I may have missed!

Each item is in order of how they are numbered on the photo just above!

#1: A 6 Qt./5.7 L Sterilite box with lid. This is to store most everything in and is small enough to fit under most car seats!

#2: Two WalMart bags, or bags from other stores. These are great for gathering up trash and/or throwing wet or dirty clothes in. I folded mine in half and rolled them up so they would take up less space. There is a way to fold them somehow, but I have yet to learn that trick!

#3: A medical kit. I like to keep everything I'll need stored in one bag so that it's all in one place and I don't have to worry about losing it. Not only do I keep extra medical supplies, but I also keep my emergency medication in case I didn't bring enough or I have a panic attack and need something that I don't have. Items to include: 1 qt. size ziploc bag, gauze pads, medical tape, rubber gloves, band aids, floss, epi pen (I have many allergies), regular allergy pills, ace bandage wrap, Ibuprofen/tylenol, cough drops, extra medication, cotton balls/q-tips, and neosporin. If you're certified for CPR you should include a mouth to mouth device.

#4: Extra eye glasses cleaner. I don't know about you, but I ALWAYS forget this stuff when I need it most! You should probably include an extra cloth too.

#5: A mini tub of vaseline. You can find these at WalMart. Chances are you probably won't need a lot anyway.

#6 An Emergency Blanket. This blanket is especially nice to have if you are by yourself and might get stranded in really cold weather. It reflects about 90% of your body heat back to you so you will stay warmer for longer. I would say one per person.

#7: Small package of kleenex. I actually packed two because I sneeze A LOT! No joke. I would put a whole box in the car, but it would probably get dirt in it and that would make me sneeze even more...so this will work for now.

#8: Feminine Products. Girls, you know what you use. Pack about three each be it tampon or pad. You never know when you will be in need of these life savers!

#9: A spare washcloth. Multiple purposes which I won't go into...

#10: A blanket, or three depending on how many people you have in your car. Blankets are nice if you get stranded, or if you plan on taking a nap during your work break...although that's probably not the safest of ideas now that I think of it! Oh yes, and this won't be fitting in this little box so you may want to store it in a trash bag under your car seat so it won't get dirty. Just a thought!

#11: A gallon size ziploc bag. In case anyone has car sickness and you don't have time to pull over anywhere...

#12: Spare napkins. A must if you plan to eat meals in your car!

#13: Extra hair things. You know what you use for your hair, but for me personally I included a large clip, 2 hair elastics, 3 large bobby pins, and 5 small bobby pins. I am forever losing these and it's always nice to have extra! Oh! I stored these in a small crafting ziploc bag so that they would be easy to find in the box!

#14: Solid perfume. Not really a true emergency item, but I hate it when I get in the car and realize I've forgotten to spray on some fragrance...at least a solid will give me some smell other than myself! I wouldn't suggest a travel size of your regular scent since it would be in liquid form and if it spilled...yeah, that'd be a mess!

#15: Breath mints. I choose mints over gum because, especially in summer, gum usually doesn't do very well in the car and is just gross. At least this way you still get the minty flavor in your mouth!

#16: Snacks. I just had fruit snacks available, but you can keep any kind of prepackaged snack in your little kit that you want! I personally would like to get some granola bars to add to our box. Nuts, dried fruit, trail mix, and dry cereal are good and fairly/mostly healthy choices for kids & adults too!

#17: Travel size hairspray. I'm Pentecostal and let me tell you, we cannot go without our hairspray!!! (Well, I could, but I'd still like to have it just in case!)

#18: Hand lotion! I am always in need of hand lotion. And in case you didn't know I love MaryKay's Satin Hands Peach! :)

#19: A small notebook and a pencil or two. I always think of things I need to remember when I'm in the car and that's really why I'm adding this, but I've seen other's include it for writing down grocery lists or important numbers, etc.

#20: A small LED flashlight. If you have car trouble at night you really aren't going to be able to figure out what's going on in the dark now are you?

#21: Carmex or another chap stick. I personally like carmex...although if I had vaseline I'd use that before Carmex, but other people...aka my sisters who often ride with us...would rather not use vaseline, so I'm bringing this for them!

#22: Baking Soda. Small car fire??? No problem!

#23: A multi-use tool. For it's...multi uses...of course!

#24: Hand sanitizer. I keep a small bottle in the box itself and then a bottle in each door (there are two on our car) of our car. This way it is very easy to get to each time we get in the car after being somewhere and we can use it easily without touching anything else! ~Something I learned from my mom!

#25: The Beauty Kit: nail clippers, mini nail buffer, and tweezers. I kept these in a small crafting ziploc as well.

#26: Duct tape. Always good to have no matter where you are! I actually have a tutorial here where you can wrap the DT around a piece of cardboard to save room no matter what container you choose to use!

Well that's all I've come up with so far! If this kit is anything like my BOB (see this post to learn more) then I'll always be finding something else to add to it! I would eventually like to add some bungee cords and jumper cables, but those won't be in the kit they will be in the car in general.

Other Items To Consider:
I didn't want to include hand sanitizing wipes because I've found that once you open them they dry out rather quickly. Some other items to consider:
~batteries.
~toilet paper.
~ice scraper.
~bottled water.
~baby wipes
~diapers.
~change of clothes.
~comfy shoes/tennis shoes.

Thoughts on Packing for a Road Trip:
~Trash bags. To keep all the trash in one location, making it easier to throw away once you stop.
~Individual kits for each person so that they all have everything. Some may need more of one thing than another. This also helps avoid the problem of running out.
~Individual snack bags for children especially since this really helps distract them a lot!

DIY Petticoat Style Skirt

This skirt was inspired when I saw a photo on Pinterest. It led to Alisa Burke's blog where I found a lovely tutorial for a Petticoat. I like my skirts a little longer though, and I wanted to add some bits of lace to mine. I wanted mine to be an actual skirt, not just a petticoat. I also wanted it to be a fall/winter skirt. Here is what I came up with.

This isn't my best tutorial, but it is basic enough that anyone who already knows how to sew will be able to make their own skirt similar to this. I've worn this skirt by itself and under another skirt. It's super warm and I'm so glad to have it for this really cold weather which I'm not used to!

Directions
1. Decide the length of your skirt. Mine was mid-calf.

Fold a large piece of fabric in half and pin the side. Sew it shut.

Here is what the fabric looked like on me after I got the side sewn shut. All the ruffles were really wide, and then the elastic made this fit me around the waist in the end.

2. Fold a large piece of fabric in half. Hold it around your waist. Make sure the bottom of the "skirt" pieces touch each other.
3. Take the fabric and pin the open side shut. Sew along the edge.
4. Go ahead and make the slot for the elastic, but don't add the elastic. Sew everything here that you can.

All the ruffles I made for this skirt.

5. Now cut long strips of fabric for the ruffles.  I had three main types of fabric that I used. In each fabric make sure to cut all the strips the same width. For variation cut each fabric a different width.

I used lace from the edge of three different curtains for my skirt.

Cut the lace as well. This will not be ruffled, but have it ready to go.
6. Ruffle each strip of fabric. I did raw edges, but if you would like good edges view this tutorial from my Denim Skirt with Ruffles.
7. Lay each ruffle and the lace out on the floor in the order you want in on the skirt. One by one, starting at the bottom, start pinning on and sewing one ruffle at a time. This part will take the longest.
8. Once all the ruffles and lace have been sewn on put the elastic in the band and sew in place.
9. Now your skirt is done!

I'm sorry this isn't a better tutorial. I didn't take very many photo's and I didn't keep up with the directions while I was making it so I had a hard time putting this together from memory.

Cornbread In A Pan

The original recipe is one I found via Pinterest which led to the blog Can You Stay For Dinner. My mom has a recipe she has pretty much always used...but it's not one of my favorite...honestly I don't like cornbread period...it doesn't matter who makes it, I probably won't eat it. I had this pin saved on Pinterest from almost a year ago and decided it was time to give it a try tonight since we were having bean soup and you must eat cornbread with bean soup! Well, let me tell ya....I ate two WHOLE, big, PIECES, by-my-self!!! Wow! And out of the whole pan there were only about 4 pieces left...so it was a huge hit for the 6 of us who ate dinner this evening!

Servings: 1 9x13 pan of cornbread which can be cut into differnt sizes for serving.

Ingredients
1/2 stick butter
1 cup oil
1 cup water
1 cup milk
2 Tablespoons white vinegar
2 eggs
4 Tablespoons sugar
2 cups cornmeal
2 cups white flour
2 Tablespoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda

Directions
1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
2. In a microwave safe bowl melt the butter.
3. Add in the oil, milk, water, white vinegar, and eggs. Mix until well blended.
4. Add in sugar, cornmeal, and flour. Before mixing add in the baking powder and baking soda. Mix until everything is blended.
5. Pour into a greased 9x13 glass baking pan.
6. Bake in oven for 30-35 minutes. Serve warm and with butter (if you so wish).

Blogging Tips | Add The "Pin It" Button

If you are like me, the thought of editing the HTML code to your blog is quite terrifying. But let me reassure you...this is perfectly safe and easy AND there is a "preview" button to make sure you like where the button goes. If not, you can always click "clear edits" and the code you entered will be gone and you blog will be back to the way it was before you started playing with the code.

For NO reason at all should you push the "close" or "save template" buttons UNLESS you have the code exactly where you want it and have already PREVIEWED it!!!! This is super important!

Now...let's see if I can get this all written down for you!

Step 1

You will be on the homepage of your blog. Click on "Design".

Step 2

Now you are on the "Template" page. Click on "Edit HTML."

Step 3

All of the text in the yellow box is pretty much to discourage people from messing with the code so they won't screw up their blogs...but if you are following a tutorial or you know what you are doing (or if you are adding a Pin It! Button!!!) click "Proceed".

Step 4

At the very top of all the HTML (not inside the box, just at the top) there will be a little spot to check. Check the box next to "expand widget templates". Why? I have no clue...it just seems to be what makes this thing work.

Step 5

Notice I have TWO areas surrounded with the red circle. The first one you need to notice is the one on the right of the screen surrounding the scroll bar thingy. About halfway down this massive amount of text there will be a little line you need to look for...that is what is highlighted in the second red circle. But in case you can't read it...this is what it says: <!-- quickedit pencil -->. Do you know about the quick edit pencil on Blogger posts? In you don't: you can click it to immediately be taking to the edit-friendly version where you can update or delete something from the post. ...back to the topic. Now that you've found this little line of HTML proceed to step 6.

Step 6

The next thing you need to look for is FIVE rows of text below the last piece you found (remember: <!-- quickedit pencil --> ). This new part of code is really short: </b:if>.

Step 7

Click next to the code and push "enter" on the keyboard. (Notice the empty space after the small code.)

Step 8

We're almost done! Now you need to copy this code:

<a class='pin-it-button' count-layout='horizontal' expr:href='&quot;http://pinterest.com/pin/create/button/?url=&quot; + data:post.url'>Pin It Now!</a>
<a href='javascript:void(run_pinmarklet())' style='margin-left:-93px; width:43px; height:20px; display:inline-block;'/>
<script src='http://assets.pinterest.com/js/pinit.js' type='text/javascript'/>
<script type='text/javascript'>
function run_pinmarklet() {
var e=document.createElement(&#39;script&#39;); e.setAttribute(&#39;type&#39;,&#39;text/javascript&#39;);
e.setAttribute(&#39;charset&#39;,&#39;UTF-8&#39;);
e.setAttribute(&#39;src&#39;,&#39;http://assets.pinterest.com/js/pinmarklet.js?r=&#39; + Math.random()*99999999);
document.body.appendChild(e);
}
</script>

Step 9

And paste the code in the empty line you created in step 7.

Step 10

Preview the code!! When you click on "preview" it will open a new window and it will be a preview of your homepage. Scroll down to the bottom of the first post. There on the right will be your button! (I tried everything I could to get it before the Google button, but alas, it is off by itself. It really doesn't look bad though.)

Step 11

Go back to the page where you were editing the code (you will have to click on the tab at the top of your screen). Click orange "Save template".

Congratulations for being brave and navigating through this very difficult task!

P.S. This is my very first tutorial using photos from my computer screen (I had to hop over to Youtube to figure out how to do this by the way! But the video linked is super helpful, although silent.) It is a TON of work to put together a tutorial like this. I had NO clue! I have a lot more respect for people who take the time to put these together! And I know I won't be making these very often!!!

P.S.S. If you have a suggestion for another type of tutorial for blogging let me know and I'll see what I can do! Even though it was hard it was a GREAT learning experience!

Special thanks to MaryBeth over at SecondHand Couture for the only DECENT tutorial I saw on how to do this!

DIY Framed Lace

For the longest time I had a pin on Pinterest with no link and it was of framed lace. I absolutely loved the idea and, with this cleaning off/out Pinterest boards project, I ran across it again. This afternoon I looked up several tutorials (after entering the search words "framed lace" on Pinterest). None of them where what I wanted. I didn't want just the lace, I wanted a back in the frame so I could hang it on the wall, and I wanted to use scrap lace leftover from previous projects.

All of the other things in this pic are my mom's decor in her living room. I thought the frame looked better with the added stuff instead of being alone on a white wall and empty shelf.

What You Need
A frame (I'm going with the antique look in my new home, but any frame will do)
A piece of textured (or not) paper in a color which will go with your decor
Enough lace to cover the frame and then a little over the edges
Masking Tape

Directions

1. Take apart and clean your frame. Mine was in a box of frames my mom was getting rid of so it was quite dirty. I wiped down the frame part with a wet cleaning rag, and then used glass cleaner on the glass part.

2. Next, measure the glass...unless you already know what size it is. I didn't know so I had to measure mine.

3. Now cut your paper to fit the glass. Fortunately for me, my mom has this super nice paper cutter which she usually uses for scrapbooking so this step was easy!

4. Lay out the piece of lace you are using. Decide which part of the lace you want framed. For example, on my fabric I wanted the flower with defined petals framed off center with pieces of the remaining lace around it.

5. Put the piece of paper over the spot you want to have framed.

6. Using sewing scissors cut around the paper, leaving a little space (not quite an inch) around all four edges.

7. Flip over the paper (if you're like me and put the pretty side up lol).

8. Tape the shortest sides first. Just fold down the extra bit of lace at the top of the paper, put about a 2 inch strip of masking tape on it, and then fold up the bottom extra bit of lace and add masking tape to it.

This pic is a little blurry...and I didn't notice that until I loaded everything.

9. Now for the sides. This was a little tricky, but I figured it out fast. The side will start by looking goofy with a point on each of the four corners.

10. Using a finger push the point down between the taped edge of lace and the un-taped edge of lace.

11. Now, keeping your finger there to hold the lace, use the other hand to fold the lace down and make a pretty little point. Secure it with a piece of tape. And, depending on the size of your frame (mine was 5 by 7) you can add a piece of tape for the middle part which will help when you slide the paper into the frame.

12. Put the paper into the frame, and secure it with the back part.

13. Display your work proudly!

This little frame will be part of (so far 5) the antique frames I will be collecting to display Bible verses I want to cross stitch, and other little things in my new apartment. I am so glad I thought to grab these out of the get rid of boxes!
