My Episode with Baby Blues

This photo was taken at the hospital. Little Man is probably 1 or 2 days old here.

I don't think anyone could ever get used to depression, even if they're like me and suffer from depression on and off throughout the week (which for me is due to the brain injury I got in the car wreck a few years ago). Before I had Little Man I had talked to my midwife (who oversaw most of my pregnancy care, but didn't do the delivery) about postpartum depression. I was worried about getting it because I had problems with depression already and I thought I might get really bad Baby Blues... like to the point that I wouldn't want to be around my son. This was a big worry for me before he was born. She said because I deal with depression already it was likely I would get Baby Blues, but how bad they would be is something you really can't pre-determine.

Around 5 weeks after LM was born I suddenly felt like I had been slammed with a black cloud. I knew I was severely depressed, but couldn't figure out why because the few weeks since LM was born I had been doing so much better with my regular depression than usual. I had been happy, I loved spending time with my son, and I felt like over-all life was great. A few days into this depression session though I was starting to worry. Nothing I did would shake the severe sadness, the feeling of not wanting to get out of bed to do anything, not even a shower helped ease this depression!

I think around the 5th day I ended up talking to my mom about what was going on. I told her how I couldn't figure out why I was so depressed, how I was having trouble functioning (eating, sleeping, general stuff I usually did like cleaning house), and that I just felt like a giant black cloud was taking the light out of everything around me. She suggested that it might be Baby Blues and to just keep an eye on it and see how long it lasted. At that point I had completely forgotten about Baby Blues and even at that time I didn't really think that's what it was. Looking back now I'm quite sure that was my Baby Blues. Fortunately I didn't get those feelings of not wanting to be around my child. In this case, being around him actually helped me overcome a lot of the depressive feelings.

I don't really know how long the severe depression went on, but I'm thinking it lasted about a week. I am glad that it's over and that I survived it. There were a lot of random busting into tears for no reason, a lot of laying in bed sleeping/resting (or trying to sleep!), and a lot of eating chocolate and sweets. For some reason I couldn't get enough sugary foods that week either. I ate a ton of brownies (which I made several times because A. they were easy to fix and B. they had less sugar than a lot of other things I could've made). I actually perfected the recipe and added in semi-sweet chocolate chips too which made them really fantastic (if you love chocolate then these brownies are to die for! Hubby likes them but isn't a huge fan of all the chocolate). {Brownie recipe here!} I crave chocolate when I'm severely depressed.

Since that week I've only had the usual occasional depression stuff that I've dealt with for the past two and a half years. Nothing major and certainly nothing I can't handle. That Baby Blues stuff is something completely different though. I don't think I've ever experienced a depression so awful as that. Of course I may not completely remember all the depressed feelings I've had due to my brain injury which makes my memories quite hit and miss, but I'm pretty sure that's the worst depression I've ever had. I am grateful it didn't last long and that it's over now, that part was not a very fun experience!

That's my thoughts and feelings on the Baby Blues. I debated on writing this post, but I thought maybe writing about what I've been going through since having LM would help me remember some of the important things next time around and in the meantime they might help someone else who is going through the same things.

This Is Me | It's Not Forced On Me

I get a lot of people who ask me why I am the way that I am. I'm talking about in terms of religion. I know a lot of you bloggers have never met me in person, but {I hope} that even by reading some, if not all, of my posts you can tell that there's something different about me. One thing people who see me tend to think when they see me is that because I go to church I am forced to only wear skirts/dresses, and not cut my hair, or wear jewelry... But that's just not the case!!

{photo via Pinterest}

I am an Apostolic Pentecostal Christian. I haven't always been this way. I was raised Baptist my whole life and up until I started going to college I went to Baptist churches (plural because we moved a few times). In college I started attending an non-denominational church for awhile, but very quickly started skipping church until it was rare if I showed up at all. This is where I was up until the time of my Car Wreck (story for another time). After the car wreck I pretty much did nothing but lay in bed all day and let my body recover from all the things it had gone through. I had a really good friend who would "rescue" me and, as we called it, "Ro-nap" me (like kidnapping only she would just steal me for a day or so or the whole weekend sometimes too) and when I was with her she would drag me to church. Now it's not because I didn't want to go to church, it's just that many times I didn't feel good and would only want to lay around and do nothing. That and I didn't really feel like God was that important to me. In fact I was kind of angry at him because I thought my life was ruined.

Photos from my college days. I liked changing the color of my hair then...if you can't tell lol.

At the time of the car wreck I was a full time student at Rose State College (Oklahoma), I worked two part time jobs (one at Old Navy, which I LOVED! and one at Payless Shoe Source, which I hated...but that IS where I met Ro so I guess I ended up with a job there for a reason!), and I would hang out with friends on days that weren't too busy working or going to school. I thought I had a pretty almost-perfect life and when all that was suddenly gone I wasn't a happy person to be around.

Ro & I.

Okay, I know that was a bit of a side track, but it's important to help you understand the story. So back to Ro dragging me to church: One time I purposefully ONLY put on a tank top and casual shorts to wear over to her apartment so she wouldn't make me go with her to church. That didn't work out quite like I planned though because when she got home from work and realized that's all I had brought she drove the 20 miles back to my house so I could go get proper church clothes. Needless to say, I never tried that again! My point in telling you that is someone cared enough about me that even when I tried my best to get out of doing something that was good for me, and even when they didn't really have the extra money to drive all the way back to my house so I could get clothes for church, she did...and I really think that it is because of her persistence and not letting me be a lazy butt that God was able to work on my heart (in the services I went to with her...oh yeah! She went to the Shawnee UPC in Oklahoma at the time) that he was able to change it piece by piece so that I would be able to open up to him. All this happened from 2010 on through 2011 until she moved away.

In August 2011 Autry and I started dating. He was raised Pentecostal but wasn't in church at the time. BUT because he had been raised in it he was able to better help me understand some of the things I didn't get like why the women didn't cut their hair. That was something I had really never seen before (at least that I remember). Or the only wearing skirts/dresses and not pants. The no make-up thing. The now jewelry thing. Between Autry, Ro, her grandma, and my pastors wife I really was able to learn and understand why Pentecostal people did these things (that is a WHOLE different topic for some other time! but email me if you're curious and I'll be glad to explain!).

Left: Me in 2011. One of my One Year Car Wreck Anniversary photos. {View more here}
Right: Me in June 2012. Same blue eyes, same great smile, just no make up this time.

I do the things I do because of the relationship I have with God. I have a conviction that I should not wear make-up. Any make-up, not even foundation or mascara. I do wear a chap stick and I do use moisturizers and face wash, but that has more to do with hygiene than altering the beautiful face God has given me. I also have a conviction to not wear a lot of jewelry. Actually the only piece of jewelry I wear anymore are my wedding rings. I could wear a watch I suppose, but I don't use them so there's really no point in that for me. But as far as bracelets, necklaces, toe rings, anklets, earrings...I don't feel that those are things I need to put on my body. The same goes for jeans/pants. I have a conviction to wear skirts/dresses and to not wear pants/shorts (unless its sleepwear and that's only worn inside my own home).

The no cutting my hair has been one thing that I didn't find hard to adjust to. Not cutting my hair was a huge change for me and was difficult for my family to understand at first because we were not raised with these beliefs or convictions so naturally I got a lot of questions from them about why I was changing my appearance so much. I think no one thought that this would last. I am a completely different person now from the one I was almost three years ago now. The only explanation I have for that is God saved my life in the car wreck, he brought Ro into my life to lead me back to the truth (by her taking me to church so much), he brought Autry into my life because God knew that he would help me and I'd be able to help him (we're both in church now)...there are so many things that have happened over the past few years that there is NO possible way I can say that I was or am being forced to live the way I do. This is a subject I could probably go on and on about, but I will end it here for now. Thank you for reading and of course if you have questions...I'm not shy, so ask away!

A Week of Thanks | Day 5: Healing

This is a mini-series which is just about over! :( I've enjoyed writing it a lot and I do hope that you've enjoyed reading it! Here are the other posts from this series: #1 Nice Things, #2 A Good Car, #3 Nephews & Nieces, #4 My Savior, #6 Together, #7 Time.

Day 5: I am thankful for Healing.

Since 2010 my life has revolved around doctors' appointments, medications, laying in bed, and taking care of myself...which all lead to one thing: healing my body. Recovering from a nasty car wreck like I was in may take the rest of my life, but I know that I have experienced healing that was not expected and I am forever thankful for it! I probably won't be a person without massive amounts of aches and pains, but at least I am now to a point where I can function to some degree and do well. I am grateful for the healing my body has done and God has granted me over the past two years and I hope will continue in the years to come.

Words On Sunday | What Were You Thinking?!

(photo via Psych Central)

Wow, I may need to reconsider the title of this series to something more like: things I need to learn lol. Because of my brain injury I have the worst time knowing if what I am thinking is actually a fact or if it is truth. When I am blogging, emailing, or journaling it's not hard for me to see what is real...but in my 'real' life I have a very difficult time because I can't remember things and so my brain tends to pull bits and pieces and smoosh them together into something that looks right, but really is just an illusion. This is really quite frustrating and my poor family and Autry have to put up with it all the time. I am grateful that they do though because I don't know what I'd do without them. I have learned that just because I think something happened doesn't mean that it actually did happen.

Migraine Prevention

I want to share a few of the things that have really helped me with my migraines over the past two years. First I want to explain my migraines, but if you don't want to read about that just skip down to Ways To Help Migraines! :)

About My Migraines
Migraines have become something I deal with on a daily basis since October 11, of 2010. I have been on a lot of medications, some which have helped, and some which have actually made the migraines worse. Many people do not know or realize this but there are actually three different types of migraines. I didn't even know you could have more than a head migraine until after my car wreck and I talked with my neurologist and he explained why I was having such bad stomach and chest pain constantly for no apparent reason...to me.

Head Migraines
Of course this is type of migraine is pretty common and popular and well known among people who suffer from migraine pains. With a head migraine you can or are light sensitive and or noise sensitive at the same time. Usually I only deal with one or the other unless it's a terrible migraine and then I deal with both symptoms at the same time and that is never fun!

Chest or Heart Migraine
This migraine comes from the lining of the heart and can feel like a heart attack at times. You can also have difficulty breathing, especially taking deep breaths. Changing positions whether laying down, sitting up, or standing is often painful. Talking can sometimes be difficult. These are not fun migraines and are generally much more painful in my experience than even my worst head migraines.

Abdomen/Stomach Migraines
Often I thought I was starting to have a new food allergy build up (I'm allergic to a LOT of foods!) because after I would eat I would be in so much pain I would not be able to do anything but curl up in a ball and lay on the floor, or couch or my bed. Sometimes it would hurt so bad that all I could do was cry. I told my doctor about my food allergies and how I thought my increased stomach pain was due to that and when he explained about the abdomen migraine it all started to make sense. The reason being: many times this migraine would hit and I hadn't even eaten anything at all! Much less something I was even remotely allergic to. When he explained this migraine to me I felt a sense of relief. Finally I knew why I had such terrible stomach cramps, pain, and out of control nausea at times.

All three of these migraines were increased when I was more stressed than usual. I dealt with these migraines on a weekly or daily basis until he was able to start me on the trial and error medication path to finding something to help me prevent these migraines from causing so many problems.

Ways To Help Migraines
I'll get to the medication part in just a minute, but these are the things that I've found most useful/helpful in the past two years for giving relief to my migraines and 'controlling' them in a sense.

Water
Drink plenty of water! You should drink half your body weight in ounces. So for example I will use myself: I weight about 160 lbs. and half of that is 80 so for me that would be 80 ounces of water a day. I am the worlds' worst at drinking the correct amount of water that I should...but I'm going to really start working harder on that because when I drank this amount of water on a regular basis I really felt marvelous!

Sleep at Night
Get yourself on a sleep schedule. Go to bed at a regular time and get up at a regular time. If this means getting in bed and reading for 30 minutes so that you will be sleepy enough to actually sleep, then DO IT! If this means logging off the computer and putting it in the other room for the night, then DO IT! Get your body on a regular schedule so that you are getting a good amount of sleep at night.

Sleep with Migraines
When you have a migraine and you have the opportunity, take a nap! I like to take a 2 hour nap at the least because that really helps knock out the pain. This gives your body a chance to relax and recover without you suffering too much and is never a bad idea when you're dealing with any kind of migraine!

Ice Packs
I have found ice to be a great source of almost instant pain relief when I have a terrible migraine. This method takes about 20 minutes before you start to feel relief, and until then the area that has the ice feels SUPER cold! But tough it out, because the ice really does help the migraine to calm down and be less painful. Do 20 minutes of ice, remove the ice for 20 minutes, and then do 20 more minutes of ice. Repeat as necessary. You can also move the ice to different areas. I've found the back of the neck, forehead, and temples to be the quickest working areas for myself.

Dark Chocolate
Yeah, I know! Girls this is real! Chocolate really does help your brain...and not only that it can help your taste buds, but chocolate also helps decrease stress and lessen pain! I wouldn't sit and eat a ton of chocolate just for those reasons though. I was actually told by my doctor that eating dark chocolate was not a bad thing, and that when I had a migraine it could be helpful to eat a bit of chocolate. I love chocolate and am now thinking I should've invested in the Hershey's company about two years ago!

Medications
Although I've tried a lot of different medicines to help 'prevent' migraines only one has really worked great for me. That would be Naprosyn (I took the generic version Naproxen). I took 375mg twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. Unfortunately you can only be on it for 2-3 years because of the amount of damage it does to internal organs...so now I am in the process of trying to find a new migraine prevention medication (as of October 2012) and it is NOT fun. I have literally spent most of the last two weeks in bed because of migraines and I'm really having a hard time with the change. The current medication I am on does not seem to be working so it may need to have the dosage upped or I may need to start trying a new medication all together. Whatever the situation, I am not looking forward to it.

In case you do not already know Naproxen Sodium (Aleve) and Naproxen/Naprosyn are NOT the same medication!! I was misdirected when the pharmacy was out of my medicine once to take Aleve and I had rebound migraines which were much, much worse than my regular migraines because Aleve is not meant to be taken by someone like me with migraines on a regular basis like that (two times a day for weeks on end). Fortunately my nurse was able to figure out the problem and we were able to correct the mistake and get me back on the correct medication and the migraines were back under control once again.

Closing For Now
I've dealt with a lot in the way of migraines over the past two years, but I really think that I've learned a lot as well. I would really like to be able to afford a Rain Drop kit which has a lot of different essential oils in it. I've heard of a lot of different ways to help reduce migraines by using essential oils, but I don't have the oils or the money right now to try and see if this would help me. I'm sure there is so much more I could write about and eventually I probably will, but this is what I have for the moment on the topic of migraines. Of course if you have a question please ask me and I would love to talk to anyone who is interested in learning/knowing more about the other types of migraines, etc.

Words On Sunday | Kindness

(photo via Pinterest)

Last week I shared with you the Cherokee Proverb, and this week I am sharing yet another thing that I need to work on...hmm, maybe this series is not such a good idea after all lol. I have the hardest time keeping control over my temper, especially when so much of it is not in my control because of my brain injury and the medications I am on. This makes it extremely hard not to fly off the handle when someone makes me mad. Being kind to someone I am upset with is generally the very last thing in my mind when I'm angry...I wish I could change that, but it seems that I am stuck in a rut for now.

One Year Car Wreck Anniversary Photos

Technically this is now two years since my car wreck, but I went out and had my sister Lyd take my pics today, as a celebration and something to look back on next year, and I wanted to first share last year's photo's before sharing the photos from today (I still have to edit them...and they're in line...I have two other photo shoots waiting before I get to these so it may be next week before they come up on the blog). Not only was I different health wise last year, but I was also different spiritually and emotionally too. I love these photos and I know that I'll always cherish them since they were a celebration of making it that first year!

All photos were taken by my sister Lyd and edited by me.

I hope you've enjoyed these photos! I barely remember taking them. I love them though. A piece of time captured in color. A memory I can keep forever. :)

Verse A Day October Challenge | Days 11 & 12

I really do promise I will try and keep up with this challenge better! :) Yesterday was one week on my new medicine so it was time to start taking two pills...I was quite out of it. I'm still doing pretty rough today. I took a long nap and have kept to my room most of the day.

Day 11: Something Close-Up

This one was really hard for me to find a verse for. I really had no clue where to start. I remembered a verse my mom had me memorize when I was little. It fits pretty well with today's topic.

James 4:8 KJV: "Draw nigh to God and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded."

Day 12: On The Table

This is another verse I memorized when I was a child.

Psalms 23:5 KJV: "Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over."

The Car Wreck Story (part 1)

This post has been a long time in coming because it is so hard for me to remember things. I took several days over a period of five weeks to put this post together. I wanted to have it on my The Car Wreck page so that anyone who was interested or just plain curious could read all about it in one place. I tend to bring up bits and piece in different posts, but I wanted the main collection of events in one solid place. What better day to bring this post to life than the two year anniversary? :)

Before the wreck...this was me.

How Life Was: I was just a normal college student/working girl. I attended college on campus at Rose State College, in Midwest City, OK. I worked two part time jobs, one for Old Navy (which I absolutely loved!) and one for Payless Shoe Source (which I hated with a passion!!), I also sat with a friends grandparents on the weekends, and was active in my at-the-time-church. Friends were something that I had a lot of and we would hang out and go see a movie or eat at McAllister's (a really nice soup and sandwich restaurant).

1994 Pontiac Firebird.

Eight Months Earlier: The most exciting day of my life, I finally bought my very own car! A bright red T-top, 1994 Firebird. No more driving my parents van! This was a long process of searching and looking at so many cars which were in terrible shape...and not only that they weren't 'cool' either. When I went to look at this car I prayed, like I did every time I looked at a car, that if it wasn't the one I would know. The price was more than the cash I had so I asked if she would take 200 off. She said she could do that. My next thing was I had to make sure I could afford the insurance. I prayed again, if this isn't supposed to work then God please make it less than $100 a month. It was $98! I bought the car. The breaks had to be changed right away because a previous driver had done something to them to make them warped, but that was not a problem. Rear tires were needed, and they were bought during the summer. The only thing that was a problem and would eventually need to be fixed was the starter. I didn't have the $80 to do that, even with my two jobs.

At that point in my life I had a deep hatred in my heart towards my family. I did not want to be around them, I did not want their help, and most of all I did not want them in my life. I am SO grateful to God that he did not allow me the opportunity to move out because I would be lost to my family and who-knows-where right now if I had moved out and cut off all connections with them.

October 10, 2010: The day of the wreck. I was going about my normal busy schedule day the morning of the wreck. I had an interview for Chili's, a Mexican style restaurant, and I finally had saved the money I needed to replace my starter. It had gotten to the point where it would take me 15 minutes just to get the engine running. Not only was it stressful, but it was a pain and desperately needed fixing.

I took my car to the shop and dropped it off. I went back home and did little things that I needed done, then I went back out to pick up my newly fixed car. I was so very excited the first time I sat in it after it was fixed and the engine started right away. It was such a relief and a wonderful feeling to hear that engine start up immediately. I was in a rush to get back home to change and go in for my interview at 2pm.

We lived off of Old Highway 9 in Tecumseh. That is a terrible highway. There are accidents on it all the time. I had one little hill to go before I made the left hand turn onto my road. My house was less than 5 seconds from the highway. I remember driving behind a very slow eighteen wheeler and being extremely frustrated because I was running short on time. I remember glancing in the rear view mirror and seeing a white car behind me. I remember turning my blinker on to make that left hand turn. I remember stepping on the break to slow down. I remember thinking what all I would grab as soon as I walked in the front door and how long it would take to get back in my car and on the road again. I remember starting to pull into the opposite lane in making the turn..... I remember a loud crash as my car was hit in the drivers side. I blanked out. Then I remember squealing tires, my car sliding, thinking I would go into the big ditch on the right side of my road. I blanked out again. I remember seeing the tall cliff like wall of dirt right in front of me. I blanked out again.

Mom was standing on the edge of the highway to take this photo. This is how far my car traveled after I was hit. It is pointed in the direction of my neighbor's driveway (straight ahead) and to the right is their neighbors driveway. Our house was to the left where the main part of the gravel road traveled.

My car was stopped, I was breathing hard. I sat in stunned silence, grateful to have not hit anything. I saw that the car that hit me had stopped back up by the highway. I was at my neighbor's gate, over 100 feet from the highway. I finally got myself calmed down enough to try and get out of the car. I reached for the door handle and pushed. It didn't budge. That is when I realized that the door was bent in towards me and I panicked. I calmed down enough to climb out of the car through the passenger side.

I don't have a before pic, but this side of the car used to look as good as the car does in the second photo of this post.
The door was split into two pieces from top to bottom. The other car went into my car where the dent is at the front, unhooked and scraped down the side of my car toward the back before the cars finally disconnected and sent me on a wild ride.

Here is the same style car without the broken door so you can see the difference.

My memory does not serve me will in remembering something so long ago, but I remember the man and wife who were in the car that hit me. I thank God I never saw the woman's face because if I had run into her any time in the next months after that wreck I may have said something I would now regret (she was the driver). The man was very nice to me and made sure I was okay. The only thing I can remember thinking was: oh my god, my car is wrecked! My beautiful car is completely damaged! I just put $80 in the car this morning! I can't believe I finally spent money to get that stupid starter fixed and now I won't even be able to enjoy it! Needless to say I was very ticked off.

I don't remember if the man called the cops or if I did. I remember telling my boyfriend at the time (we had started dating the day before the wreck, but had talked two months prior to that) and my best friend Ro that I had been in a wreck. Both of them freaked out. I called my dad. He showed up not long after that...he had been out of the house at the time or he would've been there in a shorter amount of time. Oh, the wreck happened only a few yards from my driveway...

As I was waiting for the cops and my dad to show up I started feeling really bad. Somehow I remembered I had an interview and asked the neighbor whose driveway I ended up in if he had a phone book since I didn't have the number (he came out to see what had happened because he noticed my car in his driveway). After I called to let them know what had happened and that I wouldn't be able to interview that day (I was offered the chance to come in a week later...but was never able to do that) I sat on the hood of my car and waited. I had a migraine kicking in like one I'd never felt before. My back/spine started aching about 30 minutes after that.

It felt like hours before anyone showed up. My dad showed up about 20 minutes after I called him. The cops showed up about 40 minutes after that. At that point I was running out of adrenaline and starting to feel what would become a normal pain in the months to follow. I don't remember very much after the cops got there. I remember being asked questions and I remember one of the cops asking me if he needed to call an ambulance. It turns out I was looking pretty bad at that point but I didn't realize it. Dad said he would take me up to the ER once everything at the scene had been wrapped up.

After the paperwork and all was done I remember going home. I remember not being able to walk on my own down the sidewalk to the front door. I remember being so dizzy and light headed and in so much pain that I didn't want to move. I think I was crying, but I can't remember for sure. I'm crying now as I remember these things. I laid down on the couch while I waited for something before going up to the ER (I don't remember what was going on then).

Let me interrupt this story to say I have a very long history with the ER room. We go back a long time. For some reason I was blessed with being very accident prone...but at least I never broke any bones! :)

Back to the story...the ER was terrible. I HATE waiting in the ER. I did eventually end up in a bed in a room in the back part of the ER. Where I got an IV....something else I also hate is needles. I don't remember anything else about that day. At least not right now. Maybe eventually I might think of something else but for now this is it.

The photo on the left shows more accurately howI really felt. But I love the photo on the right. I think I look pretty there and after the wreck...that was rare.

The days after that ER visit I couldn't do very much. I was very drugged. I don't remember very much except texting my boyfriend Evan and playing the old computer game Chips Challenge. I had a very hard time putting sentences together. In my head I knew what I wanted to say, but it wouldn't come out right when I'd try to speak it. We thought this was a side effect of all the pain meds I was on.
The red arrows point out the three sets of skid marks that the other driver made once she realized I was turning.
The purple arrow shows the skid mark from my car.

Mom went and took pictures of my car and where it ended up and the skid marks while I was at the ER. The marks are no longer there today so it's a good thing she took the pictures.

The Next Few Weeks: I went to my primary care doctor. I don't remember anything else that happened. I think that I started going to a new chiropractor. I don't remember. I do remember being in extreme pain each time I would ride somewhere and the car would hit a bump on the road. At some point in these weeks (I think) we figured out that I had actually got a concussion in the wreck. That helped explain a lot of things, but we never really knew why no one noticed that at the ER in the beginning...we didn't learn about the concussion until a week or two later.

I've added the orangish line so that you can better see the slant in the line.
Each line extended out towards the camera was on one of my hip bones.
My spine was messed up enough that I was not walking evenly which was increasing the pain in my back and if it hadn't been corrected could've caused a lot of problems in the future.

I've added two arrows so you can hopefully make out the two lines here.
The blue arrow shows were my spine was lined up after the car wreck.
The pink arrow shows where my spine should be.
There was a 7 degree difference. Dr. Sprague said that in a typical car wreck like I experienced 2-3 degrees would be a lot.

I started going to a new chiropractor. They worked with S.O.N.A.R. waves instead of doing manual adjustments on my neck and spine. I was very grateful for this since I didn't even like to move much less let someone else move me. In a typical exam you go in and learn about the S.O.N.A.R. treatment and do measurements and x-rays of everything.

I remember being nervous before the first adjustment.

Dr. Sprague explaining the process as she was getting the machine ready.
It looks terribly scary, but it just sends waves towards the top piece in the vertebrae. This slowly and gently moves it to where it needs to be.

The appointment was over...but Dr. Sprague knew she had to get me care right away because of how bad I was. Mom and I went out for lunch and came back later for the very first adjustment. Right after the first adjustment I sat up and for the first time since the wreck I was able to say exactly what I was thinking without it coming out jumbled or me not being able to say part of it. Dr. Sprague's explanation is that the hole in the bone that lets all the nerves run through it was so cramped from the wreck that it was squeezing my nerves and not allowing them to function properly.

Chiropractic care continued for about two years. I was released under the terms that I wasn't better, but I may never be better. At some point you may not be able to keep going and have to stop. We figure I now have about a $10,000 dollar spine.

I ended up in the ER about a month after the wreck. This is when I met the man who would become my neurologist. He was quite funny and I really do appreciate all the time he has spent over the past two years taking care of me and working with me and how patience he has had while we've gone from one medicine to the next to find something to help keep my migraines from leaving me in bed all day long. He has been a great neurologist. I am really glad that I ended up in his care because the original neurologist I was scheduled to see was actually over a different part of neurology and wouldn't have been able to help me like Dr. Gordon has.

My physical therapist Mike H. and Me! Most of the times I had to have physical therapy, Mike was my therapist so he knew my background pretty well.

Physical therapy was a huge part of my getting better. I think I did therapy for my neck and back and body in general for over six months. Fortunately Shawnee Medical Center has the most amazing team of Physical Therapists and they are fun to be around. They all knew me from my many visits before for shoulder, ankle, and knee injuries in the past. They were all very encouraging and many times lifted my spirits when I was having a very hard day.

My cognitive therapist Terri M. and Me.

Cognitive therapy was introduced after I started physical therapy. In all my times of being there before I had never met Terri and didn't know who she was or what she did. She actually heard about me through the other people who worked there and found mom one day while I was in therapy and told her that she wanted to see me to see if she could help me. Phone calls were made and things were shuffled around and next thing I knew I ended up in a little room sitting across from Terri at a desk. Mom was there too taking notes since I was still unable to remember almost anything at that point. I continued therapy with Terri for a long time. I don't remember how long. Terri soon became a friend. She helped me be able to get back to normal functioning in my daily life: she helped me become responsible for my own medicine--at that time mom still had to give it to me; she helped me have a plan for getting up at normal times instead of sleeping until 12 or 2 in the afternoon; and she helped me start a card system with a few little chores on it to accomplish each day and then put on my mom's nightstand...this included: getting dressed, do my physical therapy exercises, do my cognitive therapy homework, take my medicine, and a few others. I will have to write more on this since she really did wonders and helped me get back to the person I am now.

My primary care doctor stayed with me through my journey as well. She did a lot for me and was a great doctor. I am so glad that I had so many great doctors taking care of me and worried about me. They are a big part of why I am doing so well today.

This story has so many more details to it and there are so many more problems which have stemmed from the first day of the wreck and I may never be able to write all of it, but I do want to eventually try to write a few more posts eventually. I keep everything related to my wreck and everything since posted on The Car Wreck page.

Coming Up On 2 Years

This October 11th will be 2 years since the car wreck which changed my life. I am working (very hard!) on writing out the full story of that day and everything that has happened since. It is such a long story though and has taken several days over a period of weeks to put together...and then I remembered last night I should add pics...so I've been looking for those to add in as well! Anyway, I do have that long story about "the wreck" coming up which I will publish hopefully on the day of two years. I also hope to do a mini photo shoot like I did last year as a memory of how far I've come since then. I had a few other things planned...but didn't write them down so I have no clue what they were. Hopefully they will come back to me before the 10th rolls around! :)

10 Day YOU Challenge | 9 Loves

In case you've missed out, I am doing this 10 Day YOU Challenge which is being hosted by BlogLoveTherapy (click image to go to her blog!). Here is my first post which shares My 10 Secrets.

Today's topic is 9 LOVES. Here are mine!

1. Autry. Autry is the man I fell in love with through the unlikely long distance relationship we had for 9 months BEFORE either of us ever met the other! This was after my wreck and is a blessing in a way because he can't compare this me to how I was before. It is also a blessing because his personality really is the complete opposite of mine so he is fun loving and VERY outgoing. He also jokes a lot and is set on trying to help me understand when people are joking or not (since the wreck I have been unable to tell when people are being serious or just kidding with me). As of yet, he has not succeeded. Autry is very loving, he takes good care of me, he helps hold on to me when I'm so dizzy I can't walk straight. I love him so much and thank God every day that he is in my life.

2. Baby animals. Oh...how much I love (and miss) holding baby kittens! and puppies! and rabbits! I love how soft they are and how fragile and gentle these little creators are. I really love feeling their fuzzy fur on my face and their little wet noses in my hands. I love how they play with each other, chase leaves (the kittens), jump on top of each other, and snuggle together. If I could I would be a foster mom to baby animals that don't have a mom so that they can get big enough to go into a good home. I would love to do that!

3. Thrifting & Yard Sales. If my blog is not proof enough, then I am not sharing enough posts! But going to the thrift stores is one of my favorite ways to find awesome things and really good deals! The best thing about thrift stores and yard sales is you never know what you will find! My biggest challenge is putting something back that I don't really need...Autry really helps me in this area. :) This weekend is a city wide yard sale and I cannot wait for it! (View my posts on thrifting!)

4. Blogging. Seriously this is one of my favorite things to do! I could sit and write blog posts all day long and never run out of things to say! :) Obviously some people do like my posts because in two months I went from 8 followers to 45! WOW!

5. Refashioning Clothes & Sewing in General. I sew almost all of my own clothes...mostly that's just skirts, but lately I've moved into refashioning cardigans and shirts and I am loving it! I also like to sew other things from scratch such as quilts, cloth napkins, etc. I LOVE to sew!

6. Blog design. I have been stalking Pinterest, Google, and MANY other blogs to find new ideas to add to my blog. I am always making a change to either this blog or my Exercise Encouragement Group blog. I also like to write tutorials for all the new things I am always learning about blogging! (Check out my Blogging Tips!) UPDATE: Check out my very first blog makeover here!

7. Family. I don't know what I would do without my amazing family! The last two years would have been impossible on my own. I don't know what I would've done without them! They have been there for me all the way, taking me to doctors' appointments; dealing with my mood swings from medicine changes; stepping in and helping out when I couldn't do anything; being there when I needed a hug because I was so depressed at how much my life had changed and was now at a stand still. I am truly blessed to have such amazing sisters, brothers, and parents! Thank you Mom & Dad, Justin, Allie, Brooke, Na, Val, Lyd, Emma, and AJ!

8. Home Remedies, Natural Products, and Being Frugal. Oh how often I get teased for my love of learning how to use every day things like olive oil to fix problems! Oh well...one day they may appreciate the knowledge I possess. :) I like to also make a lot of my own beauty products. I find it a fun learning challenge/experience. (check out these topics: Beauty Tips, Body Care, DIY Beauty, DIY Products, and Frugal for some of these things!)

9. Crafting. The one thing that has kept me sane before this blog came along...and the whole reason I have so much to write about on here!! I love to crochet (usually blankets or hats), sewing, preparing for moving into my own home by making as many things as I can for the decor, and do all sorts of Pinterest Inspired crafts.

Verse A Day October Challenge | Day 3: This Happened Today

(photo via Fat Mum Slim)

Man, how to find a verse for a title like this... well, today I've been in a lot of pain and hurting badly. Bad migraine, I didn't sleep well last night so I had a very hard time waking up this morning/afternoon, and then I was very nauseated and basically just plain miserable. I am very glad that I was finally able to get a hold of my nurse! She has been able to call in a prescription for me to start taking in place of my old one. The plan was to replace it once I had the last new medicine in my system. The last new medicine was to help control my depression anxiety (all of this is from my car wreck by the way!) and the new medicine is to replace the Naproxen I was taking to help prevent migraines...and it needed to be changed out since I've been on it two years and you can only be on it three at tops (something with internal organs having problems if you're on it too long). Anyway, it has been a long and rough day so I then knew what my verse would be...

Psalm 34:19 KJV: "Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the Lord delivereth him out of them all."

Thank you Jesus!

I am so grateful for my faith and for the opportunity I have to believe in Jesus!

10 Day YOU Challenge | My 10 Secrets

BlogLoveTherapy

So I am a few days late for this challenge, but basically every Thursday for the next 10 weeks I will answer one of these questions.

Todays (or this past Thursday's) question was 10 secrets. Here's mine!

1. I hate taking showers. Mostly because I get dizzy due to the stuff from my wreck and side effects from meds.

2. I am a huge procrastinator. Although this may not be a huge secret, I doubt any of you know/knew that. I usually put things off for as long as I can.

3. I hate Greek food. No joke. I will fix it for someone else, but I try never to eat it. That's probably due to the fact that I got food poisoning from it the last time I ate it.

4. I don't have a sense of humor. Well, I do, but it doesn't show. This is also something from my wreck. That part of my brain was damaged so when people crack jokes or are joking about something I usually can't tell. I usually think they are being dead serious so I usually get mad. It is a rare occasion when I actually catch the joke and it's even rarer for me to come up with a funny reply.

5. I hate reptiles. And spiders. They gross me out. I don't like snakes, crocodiles, lizards...none of them!

6. I have a terrible time fixing my hair up in cute hairstyles. You would think it is easy since I have curly hair, but it is an annoying task...thus the reason I usually throw my hair into a ponytail or leave it down.

7. I have more ideas than I have energy to complete them. This may not come as a surprise, but it is for sure true! If you don't believe me just check out these three boards of things I want to do: Home To Do/Make, Future Crafts, I Will Do/Make This.

8. I am terrible at keeping up with all three of my blogs. I tend to focus on BEB and not so much on Angel Light Photography by Helen or Exercise Encouragement Group...although I am working on updating EEG more often.

9. I have enough clothes for 10 people in my closet. No joke. I love clothes! :)

10. I really do love not wearing makeup. I've been make-up free for almost a complete year now! :)

If you'd love to join in this challenge click here and join the link-up over at BlogLoveTherapy! It's not too late to join! This past weeks link-up ends Thursday the 4th which is when the second link-up starts!

From My Bookshelf

In the process of working on getting things checked off my list for this month (read about that here), I went through my bookshelf and packed up my books into this trunk like thing which, when I move, will be a coffee table of sorts and is the perfect place to keep the books stored since I want them but don't read them very often.

My bookshelf before I packed up all the books.
This also doubled as storage for my many perfumes lol.
Top Shelf: school books and photo albums. The dog was given to me by my sister Em when I had to put down my puppy Jackie.
Middle shelf: My favorite books, some cd's, and unique little things.
Bottom Shelf: Books to read, some books I have read, and empty frames (far right).

Here are a few shots of the books I had on the shelf. I have a large variety of books I (used to) enjoy reading. I don't want to get rid of them because I am still holding onto the hope that my vision will clear enough for me to be able to focus on reading again.

Most of my Hardy Boys collection. I was never a Nancy Drew fan as a girl; I did read her books in my late teens though.
My favorite books growing up: Mandie! I loved the fact that she was of Cherokee Indian decent, like me!
The Wakefield Dynasty by Gilbert Morris. I'm actually missing book 5.

Well, there you have seen a little peek into my past life. :) I don't read much now because of my brain injury and because I have "fuzz" in my vision (it's like the stuff on the TV before you turn on the DVD player) which makes reading really, really hard for me. I would read what was necessary for college, but other books pretty much just sit there. I do have two books I'm working on right now, but I only read a page and then put it down until the next time I pick it up so who knows when I'll ever finish them.

My Weight Loss

For the past year I have been really focused on getting my weight back under control. In March 2011 I was on medicine to help with my brain injury. Unfortunately a huge side effect of this medicine was weight gain. I gained over 30 pounds, which caused me much depression and a lot of agony. My old clothes no longer fit, and if I could get them on they did not look good on me.

I spent 5 months working out, choosing what I ate carefully, drinking lots of water and walking a ton to even begin seeing any progress towards my original weight. I actually weigh 160 now which is 10 pounds (give or take) less than I weighed before the weight gain! I am very excited about this.

My current goal is to continue to tone my body and the focus is no longer weight gain. I am happy with my size and how I look for the most part. There are some areas such as my stomach/legs which I feel need more work, but that will take more time and lots of dedication.

I have an encouragement group which I have created on Facebook for the purpose of encouraging others towards their goals in weight loss and healthier living. I created this after discovering that there really wasn't anything out there (on Facebook) which was an encouragement base for these types of goals.

With Exercise Encouragement Group, on Facebook, I am able to post encouraging and motivating statements for fellow exercisers to read and be motivated to continue towards their individual goals. Recently I have been posting a motivational picture each day as I am able. This seems to be very popular and I will continue to do this.

My latest project for the Exercise Encouragement Group is to post before and after pictures such as the one I made above. I want to have a collection of these to show people who go to this page and/or "like" this page that it is possible to reach their goals.

I would like to write many more posts on how I was able to lose weight and how I have been able to keep it off with simple maintenance. This will take a lot more thought and writing before it is ready, but I will go ahead and start a draft to hopefully post as soon as I can.

I hope that you will be able to find encouragement from this post. If you are working towards goals in exercise, fitness, healthy eating, or healthy living and have a Facebook I would love for you to "like" the page so that you will be able to get updates and be encouraged. Also, if you do like the page feel free to write posts as often as you want on how things are going towards reaching the goals you have set for yourself.

UPDATE: I now run most of my posting via the Exercise Encouragement Group blog, but they are linked with the facebook page so it is still active!
