NFCS | Don't Whine, Cry Out Instead

This is a new series of sorts that I've wanted to start up for awhile, but just haven't taken the time. Basically when something really sticks with me from a church service I want to share it here on my blog for other people to read and hopefully find encouraging too!

Whining vs. Crying Out

Today's message was about Jeremiah and his book Lamentations. I'm just going to write out the things that 

really stuck with me and hope they all make sense!

Personally I've never really enjoyed reading the book of Lamentations and when Pastor Nathaniel said he was going to preach on Lamentations today I thought, "what can someone possibly learn from a book full of whining?"

Lamentations 3 (KJV)

18 And I said, My strength and my hope is perished from the Lord:

19 Remembering mine affliction and my misery, the wormwood and the gall.

20 My soul hath them still in remembrance, and is humbled in me.

21 This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hop.

22 It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because of his compassion's fail not.

23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

24 The Lord is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.

25 The Lord is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him.

The devil want's you to remember the wrong things. He doesn't want you to remember the good things God has done for and through you. NO! He want's you to remember the hard times and the troubles and the difficulties! Jeremiah was focusing on the bad when he remembered that God had done good for him. In the first verses of chapter 3 Jeremiah's focus is on all that is going wrong...but in verse 21 his heart changed when he remembered what God did for him.

Psalms 120 (KJV)

1 In my distress I cried unto the Lord, and he heard me.

Lamentations 3 (KJV)

55 I called upon thy name, O Lord, out of the low dungeon.

56 Thou hast heard my voice: hide not thine ear at my breathing, at my cry.

57 Thou drewest near in the day that I called upon the: thou saidest, Fear not.

Our purpose as Apostolic children of God is NEVER to give up and die. We are to continue to set our focus on God. If we stop whining and instead cry out to God he will hear us!

As we prepare to open presents, visit with family or friends, eat lots of delicious foods, and enjoy one another's company let's not forget the true meaning of this holiday: The Birth of Jesus! There is only one reason we have to celebrate and that is this:

John 3:16 (KJV)

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

 

Matthew 1:21 (KJV)

"And she (Mary) shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins."

Luke 2:1-20 (KJV)

1. And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Cesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.

3. And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

4. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem;

5. To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

6. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

7. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

8. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

9. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

13. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,

14. Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

15. And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherd said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.

16. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

17. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad saying which was told them concerning this child.

18. And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.

19. But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in hear heart.

20. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

 

There are a lot more verses which you can read about God & the birth of Jesus and the events that took place throughout his short life, but I really think it's pretty cool that the very first people to see Jesus in person (other than Mary & Joseph, of course) were shepherds siting in a field taking care of sheep. Not a king, not a prince, not even a wealthy person...the shepherds were first! I think that is so awesome and something to keep in mind if you ever feel like you don't have anything to give. You DON'T have to have anything!!

Verse A Day October Challenge | Days 21-29

 

Wow I got 8 days behind...not one bit good. Well, I have tried to keep up. I will admit I haven't done my best with this challenge...

Day 21: Calm
I like the story of when Jesus and the disciples were out on the water and Jesus fell asleep and a storm came. The disciples were terrified and woke Jesus to rescue them. Read what he said:

Mark 4:39 KJV: "And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm."

Day 22: In Your Town
I wasn't quite sure what to do with this so I just Googled the words "town kjv" and several verses came up. One really jumped out at me more than the others though because it had such a strong message and I felt I should pass it along with you:

Habakkuk 2:12-14 KJV: "12-Woe to him that buildeth a town with blood, and stabisheth a city by iniquity! 13-Behold, is it not of the Lord of hosts that the people shall labour in the very fire, and the people shall weary themselves for very vanity? 14-For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea."

Day 23: The View From Here
The very first thing that popped to mind was when God told Abraham (Abram at the time) what land would be given to his children and the generations following after him.

Genesis 13:14-15 KJV: "14-And the Lord said unto Abram, after that Lord was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward: 15-For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever."

Day 24: Weather
I do believe that in Job, in first chapter, when his children are killed in the oldest brother's house by the 'great wind' that it is actually talking about a tornado...I think I remember hearing that from a Bible study, or something like that a few years ago. Anyway, it was weather related kind of and was the first thing I thought of on this topic. It's really a sad point to throw in with this collection of verse, but I can't really think of any other weather related verses at the moment.

Job 1:18-19 KJV: "18-While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house: 19-And, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee."

Day 25: People
I find this verse fitting since we have the vote for the President and many other leaders of our country coming up! Do you plan to vote?

Proverbs 29:2 KJV: "When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn."

Day 26: Listening To
Listening to the words of Jesus...

Luke 12:15 KJV: "And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth."

Day 27: Morning
One book of the Bible I've read a lot of through the years is Proverbs which is why I tend to lean toward pulling verses from those chapters as I am going to do right now. I always thought this was an interesting verse. I know that when my sisters were younger (and more sarcastic) conversations about this verse got quite interesting!

Proverbs 27:14 KJV: He that blesseth his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, it shall be counted a curse to him."

Day 28: Looking Back
Although I'm sure this probably is meaning more looking back on time, the story that comes to mind is when Lot's wife looks back at the destruction of Sodom & Gomorrah and is turned into a pillar of salt as the angels had warned would happen to anyone who looked back.

Genesis 19:26 KJV: "But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt."

Day 29: Moon
I think my favorite book of the Bible is Acts. I read it a lot... One verse I've seen several times talks about the sun and the moon just before the return of Jesus:

Acts 2:20-21 KJV: "20-The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come: 21-And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved."

In Closing For Today
I know I've done a really awful job on this challenge this month, I'm hoping to do something similar next month so that I can get into the habit so it won't be so hard for me. I really do like finding verses this way! Plus there are so many different photo challenges and other challenges I could use! :) Until the next post...

Verse A Day October Challenge | Day 20

Day 20: 4 O'clock
I love this! I remember sitting in Bible study back home with 20 other people ranging anywhere from my age to 15 and we were discussing Matthew chapter 8 where Jesus heals the centurion's servant. I think we did end up discovering that it happened around 4 o'clock. Time was different then so it was hard for us to figure it out at first, but I'm pretty sure that's what we came up with. If you're interested in reading the whole story and not just this one verse read Matthew 8:5-13! This shows Jesus power to heal over distance.

Matthew 8:13 KJV: "And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour."

Verse A Day October Challenge | Days 16, 17, 18, & 19

Well, there is no good excuse for me having fallen four days behind on this challenge. I will say that on the 16th I spent almost the entire day editing photos and almost nothing else, the 17th Autry was home and then that afternoon-evening-night-next day I babysat my adorable nephew Jackson so I didn't do much on my laptop. And today I woke up with a migraine and a back ache. I think I am getting sick which is no surprise since dad and my little bro are sick already. At least my little nephew is back with his mommy so I don't have to worry about getting him sick.

Day 16: Something You Wrote
On October 16th I posted the photos I took last year as a one year mark/celebration of how far I had made it since my wreck. I cannot find or remember the verse which I used to read a lot during the past two years, but this one is just as good and fits quite well.

Philippians 4:13 KJV: "I can do all things through Christ which strengheneth me."

Day 17: Fruit
I love the verses which have the Fruit of the Spirit listed! Here they are for you:

Galatians 5:22-23 KJV: "22-But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23-meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

Day 18: Made You Smile Today
I think this one was already on this list...no fair lol. I was blessed with the opportunity to watch my adorable little nephew Jackson! He is about 3 months old and is getting SO big! This is the verse that comes to mind:

Psalms 127:3 KJV: "Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward."

Day 19: Letters
In the New Testament a lot of the books are actually collections of letters written from an author to a church. I think my favorite are the books of 1 & 2 Corinthians which are written by Paul. So many things are taught in these two books alone. Many times when I have a question the answer can be found if I search these books.

1 Corinthians 1:1-3 KJV: "1-Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother, 2-Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord both theirs and ours: 3-Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ." (I love this because it really does feel like you are reading a letter!)

Verse A Day October Challenge | Day 15

Day 15: Dinnertime.
In the first book of Corinthians (chapter 10) verses 23- 11:1 talk about glorifying God by seeking the welfare of your brother. I thought that was really interested and had to include it with today's verse.

1 Corinthians 10:30-31 KJV: "-30-For if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoke of for that for which I give thanks? -31- Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God."

Both of these verses go together so well. Sometimes you just can't read one verse by itself because the others around it really finish it. I feel that way about today's verse. One way I look at it is this: many people don't consider it a sin to drink beer or wine, but if you drink and become out of control you are not honoring to God...therefore you really should probably avoid drinking beer/wine. What do you think?

Day 13: Landscape.
This verse mentions land and that is the connection with today's word.

2 Chronicles 7:14 KJV: "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land."

Verse A Day October Challenge | Days 11 & 12

I really do promise I will try and keep up with this challenge better! :) Yesterday was one week on my new medicine so it was time to start taking two pills...I was quite out of it. I'm still doing pretty rough today. I took a long nap and have kept to my room most of the day.

Day 11: Something Close-Up

This one was really hard for me to find a verse for. I really had no clue where to start. I remembered a verse my mom had me memorize when I was little. It fits pretty well with today's topic.

James 4:8 KJV: "Draw nigh to God and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded."

Day 12: On The Table

This is another verse I memorized when I was a child.

Psalms 23:5 KJV: "Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over."

Verse A Day October Challenge | Days 9 & 10

Yesterday my blog really suffered my lack of scheduling...plus I am dealing with the terribleness of being on this new medicine, and I did a senior photo shoot and spent half the afternoon out doing that, and then most of the evening sorting through the 400+ photos to see which were really the best and which were still good, etc.

Anyway, I already knew what I wanted to do for Red so here it is:

In the Bible Jesus' words are shown in red. I wanted to write the very first and last verses where he speaks in the KJV Bible.

Matthew 3:15 KJV (at Jesus' baptism. He had come to John the Baptist to be baptized but John had refused saying he was not worthy): "And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he suffered him."

Revelation 22:20 KJV (the closing benediction of revelation and the Bible): "He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus."

I don't really understand what that second verse means, but maybe if I had taken the time to read the whole chapter before or more than the last five verses or so then I may have understood it. Anyway, this was an interesting thing to look into. I've never done this before.

Onto the verse for today: Emotion. As soon as I read this word the exact verse popped into my head. There is no introduction necessary for it, but I will say that this verse is full of emotion!

John 11:35 KJV: "Jesus wept."

I hope that the concepts I've pulled out today have caused you to think a little. :)

Verse A Day October Challenge | Day 8: Angle

Wow this was a hard one. I had to think about it for a bit before it hit me...what are other words which mean the same thing as angle: slant, one aspect of an event, the point of view from which something was written... then I had it: Peter's denial of Jesus. I am sure there are many other stories in the Gospel which could be examined from these four different views, but this was the one which was immediate brought to my mind. Let's take a look at a few verses from these books.

In each section Peter is in the area where Jesus was and is questioned by a woman...the funny thing about this is the difference in how this story is told by these authors.

Matthew 26:69-75
69. Now Peter sat without in the palace: and a damsel came unto him, saying, Thou also wast with Jesus of Galilee.
70. But he denied before them all, saying, I know not what thou sayest.
71. And when he was gone out into the porch, another maid saw him, and said unto them that were there, This fellow was also with Jesus of Nazareth.
72. And again he denied with an oath, I do not know the man.
73. And after a while came unto him they that stood by, and said to Peter, Surely thou also art one of them; for thy speech bewrayeth thee.
74. Then began he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man. And immediately the cock crew.
75. And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly.

Mark 14:66-72
66. And as Peter was beneath in the palace, there cometh one of the maids of the high priest:
67. And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked upon him, and said, And thou also wast with Jesus of Nazareth.
68. But he denied, saying, I know not, neither understand I what thou sayest. And he went out into the porch; and the cock crew.
69. And a maid saw him again, and began to say to them that stood by, This is one of them.
70. And he denied it again. And a little after, they that stood by said again to Peter, Surely thou art one of them: for thou art a Galilaean, and thy speech agreeth thereto.
71. But he began to curse and to swear, saying, I know not this man of whom you speak.
72. And the second time the cock crew. And Peter called to mind the word that Jesus said unto him, Before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. And when he thought thereon, he wept.

As you can see with just these two sides of the story there are a lot of differences in how the story was told. The details are different from story to story. If you have time I really suggest reading the remaining two sides of the story (Luke 22:54-62 and John 18:15-27). Then you will really see some major difference in detail!

Verse A Day October Challenge | Day 7: Light

Not everyone knows the meaning of their name, but my parents chose my name because of my meaning: Light. I really love that meaning, but there was a time when I didn't. I am grateful that God changed my heart and brought me back to the truth of his love!

This verse is actually my life verse.

Matthew 5:16 KJV: :Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."

I just love that verse! I am so glad that my name means light!

Verse A Day October Challenge | Day 6: I'm Thankful For...Prayer

I am thankful for Prayer. I don't know what I would do if there was no way to connect with God! I am also thankful that NO ONE can take that away from me! There is a lot of things I may lose in this life, but that will never be one of them!

I am actually going to share three verses with you today which are connected together...

Colossians 4:2-4 KJV
2. Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving;
3. Withal praying also for us, that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds:
4. That I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak.

What does this mean?
Verse 2 is saying we should persist-continue-in prayer with alertness-watch-and thanksgiving.
Verse 3: a door of utterance literally means a door of the word. An opportunity to speak the mystery:  being baptized with the Holy Ghost and with fire (Matthew 3:11).

At least, that is what I got from reading this today. :)

Verse A Day October Challenge | Day 5: Shadow

I found today's verse by searching Google for "Shadow KJV". I could only think of one verse and that was walking through the valley of the shadow of death...and I was too lazy to go downstairs and dig out the Concordance for the Bible so I figured this was the easiest way to go. I really do like the verse I found though!

Psalms 91:1 KJV: "He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty."

Verse A Day October Challenge | Day 3: This Happened Today

Man, how to find a verse for a title like this... well, today I've been in a lot of pain and hurting badly. Bad migraine, I didn't sleep well last night so I had a very hard time waking up this morning/afternoon, and then I was very nauseated and basically just plain miserable. I am very glad that I was finally able to get a hold of my nurse! She has been able to call in a prescription for me to start taking in place of my old one. The plan was to replace it once I had the last new medicine in my system. The last new medicine was to help control my depression anxiety (all of this is from my car wreck by the way!) and the new medicine is to replace the Naproxen I was taking to help prevent migraines...and it needed to be changed out since I've been on it two years and you can only be on it three at tops (something with internal organs having problems if you're on it too long). Anyway, it has been a long and rough day so I then knew what my verse would be...

Psalm 34:19 KJV: "Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the Lord delivereth him out of them all."

Thank you Jesus!

I am so grateful for my faith and for the opportunity I have to believe in Jesus!

Verse A Day October Challenge | Day 2: Lunchtime

The very first verse that came to mind was the one of Jesus feeding the 5,000...but I wanted to see if I could come up with something different since that one tends to be popular and I like to try and pick not as well-known verses.

Exodus 16:4 KJV: "Then the Lord said unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no."

Verse A Day October Challenge | Day 1: Where You Stood

One of my favorite Apostolic Pentecostal blogs to follow is McMoments & Memories. Sunday I was reading my email updates from all my favorite blogs and I ran across a post where she challenged her readers to post a verse each day of the month using the photo a day october photo posted below (post is linked above in the blog name). I am really excited about this challenge! Imagine coming up with a verse for each day using the topics below?! I think this will be a whole lot of fun! If you would like to join in feel free! :)

Day 1: Where You Stood
Isaiah 40:8, KJV: "The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever."

4 Month Bible Challenge | In Psalms Book 2

The other night I was having a hard time falling asleep and so I decided to flip through a few different sections in the beginning of the Bible. That is when I stumbled across The Chronological Order of the Old Testament Bible. After I finished reading and looking through that section I moved on to the Psalms. I decided to write down the things I figured out and now I will share them with you!

Things I Learned About the Psalms
The book of Psalms is the largest book in the Bible in terms of chapters. There are 150 chapters total. It is one of the 6 books under the label of "Books of Poetry/Wisdom" in Standard English Classification. However, in Hebrew classification it falls under the title "The Writings" as do 12 other books of the Bible. Since the Bible is not in chronological order, the Psalms would actually follow Samuel and the book after the Psalms would be 1 Kings.

Update On My Progress
The first week of Bible reading I was able to complete 67 of the 75 chapters I needed. I finished the books Nehemiah & Esther, and got to chapter 43 in the book of Psalms. When I made the goal to start and finish the Bible before the end of the year I forgot to leave extra days for when I ended up sick and would sleep all day. This has thrown off my reading schedule a little, but I am trying my best to get it back on track!

In order to get back on track I will need to read 30 chapters or so in the next three days. I was not able to read Sunday or yesterday and I've only read 2 chapters for today so far.

Chronological Order for the Old Testament Bible

Last night, while I was trying to make myself tired enough to sleep, I started reading all the notes and introduction things in my Study Bible. I came across something I wish I had found before I started this 4  month Bible reading challenge...the list of the books of the Bible in Chronological order!!! How awesome is that? I always wondered if the Bible was in order, although at some point I probably knew that, but now I know what the order really is and I'm excited!

Now that I know this order (and as soon as I finish reading the book of Psalms) I plan to follow this for the remaining books (all but the two I've finished so far: Esther & Nehemiah, and then Psalms). I really am glad to have found this. I think some things may make more sense if I read them in this order!

4 Month Bible Challenge | Psalms 17-36

Yesterday I had a bad day due to medicine problems. I ended up sleeping most of the day and then going to bed and sleeping on and off all last night. I did get a bit of reading in today so far. I plan to read some more after I finish most of this post. Fortunately I was able to get caught up, again, on my reading by completing 20 chapters today!

I wanted to write a few verses below which really stood out to me in the chapters I've read from Psalms today, all from the King James Version.

Psalms 17:8 "Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings."

Psalms 18:2-3 "The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. 3. I will call upon the Lord who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies."

Psalms 19:14 "Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer."

Psalms 20:7 "Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the Lord our God." (I want to cross stitch this one, frame it and display it in my future home.)

Psalms 24:8 "Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle.... 10. Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory..."
