Ship An Easter Themed Box!

I have a sister who lives in Oklahoma and I miss her A TON! At Christmas I sent her a box and put tinsel in it {see that post here} and the other day I was at Walmart shopping for Easter candy and thought I'd put together another box to ship off to her. She got the box already so now I can publish this post and it won't ruin the surprise!

What You Need
A box to ship
Easter grass
Stuffed bunny (optional)
Lots of Easter candy!
A card (not pictured)

Because I had several different colors of Easter grass on hand I decided to use three and put it in stripes in the box. I think doing it like this made the box more fun!

Next add in your card (not pictured) and Easter bunny. This bunny has been around for years! I found it when I pulled out the Spring decor box. I'm not sure how this got missed when she moved, but I was glad to send it to her in the box.

Finally, add in the Easter candy! I think I put five handfuls in here and it was the perfect amount for one person.

I had fun putting together this themed box! I might have to do some more of these because she totally loved it! In fact, the day before she got the box she was shopping at Walmart and was talking to me on the phone and saw the Easter candy. She almost bought some but luckily I was able to talk her out of it since I knew what was coming in the mail!

Guest Post | Children Are Sponges

I am happy to have Oklahoma Blogger, Kathi, of Oak Hill Homestead guest posting here today! She has put together this great post on ways to help educate your young child by just adding a few simple things to your normal routine which help teach Language, Concepts, and Math skills.

I haven't written on the subject of homeschooling here on BEBBlog before. I was homeschooled through high school and then went to college. I can't say I loved the whole experience, but it wasn't completely horrible either. I do appreciate the education my mom worked hard to give me and it has made me consider homeschooling my own son.

About the author: Kathi is the mother of four young adults. She studied early childhood education, but unless the grandchildren are visiting, she and her husband spend their days with goat kids instead of the human kind. Check the bottom of this post to find different ways to connect with her!

Children Are Sponges!

Children are little sponges! They absorb everything around them, soaking up experiences and words. You can provide a rich environment for your child to jumpstart his learning and help him to develop language, gross and fine motor skills, concepts and more. It doesn’t cost a penny, just your time and attention.

I’m just touching the tip of the iceberg with this post, giving you some quick pointers on teaching language, math, and concepts. I encourage you to look at your day as an opportunity to teach rather than just a to-do list to get through. Make it enjoyable for both of you.

LANGUAGE

We teach our toddlers to speak and converse by speaking and conversing with him or her. Talking as you work through the day gives the child background, experience, and knowledge. I know it feels silly sometimes, saying to your baby “I’m going to sweep the floor with the broom now. Oh look, I found the toy we were looking for this morning,” but this is how he learns to talk.

Use rich language with your toddler whenever you can. Instead of saying “do you see the dog?” you might ask “do you see the big brown dog across the street?”

Asking a preschooler questions such as: “would you prefer macaroni and cheese for lunch today, or would you like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich?” encourages an answer that is longer and more complex than just yes or no.

Letters are everywhere. The big bag of cat food in my kitchen has a large “K” in the name – mention it, point to it, trace it with your finger and encourage your child to do the same.

Read to your child. If he’s a wiggler and won’t hold still, read while he eats, when he lays down for a nap, maybe even while he’s in the bathtub.

Sing at home and at church. Many churches have moved from hymnals to the lyrics projected on the walls, but hymnals are such great learning tools that I’m sorry they are all but gone. When mom holds a hymnal for the child, the child learns what musical notes look like, they learn that when the notes go up, so do the voices. By moving your finger from left to right under the words, the child is familiar with the left to right movement when he begins to read. Meter, unison, and rhythm are all taught through music.

CONCEPTS

Colors, shapes, comparing objects, and understanding opposites are concepts. Many concepts are pre-reading and pre-math skills as well. There are many fun ways you can teach concepts to a young child, such as:

Compare sizes: “this toy is bigger than this one” and “this book is smaller than that one.”

Set a favorite toy on top of the table, then under the table, and talk about behind/in front of, next to/inside, and other “places”.

Call your child’s attention to colors in clothing, toys, books, cereal boxes, flowers, etc.

Bottle caps represent colors and shapes

Look for shapes, and encourage your child to trace them with his finger. For example, look for:

Circles: a ball, dinner plate, wheel.
Square: boxes, blocks.
Rectangles: drawer fronts, a sheet of paper, an envelope in the mailbox.
Also look for triangles and ovals and cubes.

MATH

Counting, recognizing sequences, and patterns are pre-math skills. When you help your child pick up his toys, count them all. Or count the toy cars. Or the red toy cars. Count steps as you walk. Count M&M’s. Count the yellow M&M’s. Make patterns with M&M’s: red, orange, brown, red, orange, brown. (Then comes my favorite part: eat the M&M’s!)

“After lunch we can go to the library” teaches sequencing to a toddler. For a preschooler, you might list several errands such as going to the bank, then the library, then home for lunch and a nap.

While you fold towels, let your child match the socks into pairs. Besides color, and sometimes patterns, socks also come in big and small. You are also practicing counting to two. When he is old enough to fold washcloths in half and then in half again, you are teaching fractions, shapes, and practicing motor skills.

HAVE FUN!

Believe me, the early years are fleeting and will be gone in the blink of an eye. Have fun with your children and include them in your daily routine, you’ll be teaching them more than just letters and colors and numbers.

First Big Snow of Winter 2013

These bushes are past knee high.
They had close to a foot of snow on top of them.

The first week of December brought a massive ice & snow storm to our area. I don’t think I've ever seen so much snow in my whole life! It was crazy. I’m from Oklahoma so the ice everywhere wasn't exactly a new thing (and actually made me not miss OK so much) but all the snow everywhere was crazy!

Most of our back yard was knee deep and the drifts were past that in a few areas. Over a week after the storm hit we still have most of the snow on the ground. It’s all white and pretty!

Our car does not love this weather. It got stuck the first three days hubby had to go out for work. The day of the storm he was able to get the car out of the driveway without too much trouble, but when he got home from his shift it got stuck really bad at the road end of our driveway. We attempted to dig it out, but 30 minutes in we were still getting nowhere. If the guy in the big truck hadn't come and yanked us out it probably would've taken a few hours to dig it out. Thank God for him!!

All bundled up and ready to dig the car out!

Hubby is not used to so much snow. He’s from the deep south and there really isn't snow there… ever. We are both quite tired of it though. Since the original snow storm it’s snowed two times and we had rain/sleet another day. More snow is expected in the next few days. Fortunately the highway right outside our house is a main snow route so it gets plowed regular which is a good thing. I’m just hoping this baby decides to come on a day when the roads are clear! I cannot imagine going all the way to the hospital (over an hour away) on icy roads!

Fall In Oklahoma

This past week I was going through a bunch of old photos on my external hard drive. I was looking for photos I’d taken for blog posts but never ended up writing. Turns out there were TONS! Among the blog post photos were lots of photos of my friends from Oklahoma. I really miss them! I thought I’d share a pic of a fall scene from Oklahoma on Highway 9 with you because I miss my home town and friends.

Bucket Listed | Tiramisu, Family Vacation & Snowmen!

Today on Bucket Listed I'd like to share with you three more goals which I've posted previously, but want to expand on. The 'bucket list' photos were saved off my original post: 55 Life Goals Achieved Thus Far. Here I'm sharing just a little more about these items.

Number Fifty-Two: Try Tiramisu.
I don't know about you, but I really love Italian food! And when it comes to dessert Tiramisu is my favorite! In fact, I love it so much that I made it and served it at our rehearsal dinner for our wedding!

Unfortunately I'm unable to share the recipe with you because I promised my Italian Restaurant Owning Friend I wouldn't. :) I'll tell you that it's very tasty and quite easy to make though!

Number Eighteen: Go On A Family Vacation.
At the time of the original post where this goal was shared I was back from a family vacation to Missouri. Now I live here! :) Going on a family vacation with my 'new family' (Autry & baby on the way) was something that happened much sooner than we thought it would!

May 2013. Autry & I went to Mississippi to visit his family. While we were there we discovered that I was pregnant with baby #1! Here we are visiting Red Bluff, Mississippi...a beautiful though scary place if you don't like heights!

Number Four: Build a Snowman.
No matter how old I get I don't think I'll ever get tired of building snowmen! And living in Missouri we have PERFECT snow for building...most of the time...whereas in Oklahoma it was usually too dry or just plain ice and not actually snow!

This is me working on a (very) miniature snowman. You can barely see it right behind the red cup...There wasn't a lot of snow to work with and scraping it together proved harder than you'd think. I did eventually finish it though I froze my bum off in the process!

Have you tried Tiramisu?

This Is Me | Challenge Accepted?

I don't know about you when you were a young & reckless driver, but as for myself...every time I saw a yellow light it meant only one thing: speed up and get through that light! Every time! I'm not really sure what I was thinking at the time...maybe I wasn't, but now when I see a yellow light I question whether it's worth stepping on the gas.

{photo via pophangover}

My driving style has changed a LOT since The Car Wreck. I'm a lot more cautious, most of the time, and less likely to do something stupid like push a yellow light. Of course when I was in Oklahoma we only had one red-light in our town so I would usually take a side road around it so I never had to stop at it...and even in the next town over there were ways around the stop lights, even here in Missouri I avoid stop lights as much as possible, but I usually don't push the yellow like I used to do.

Stafford Rehearsal Photos

Finally *some* of the photos from our wedding are ready to go up on the blog! I can't believe it's taken me almost 5 months to get this up. Time has gone by so fast! Anyway, I'm going to start with photos from the rehearsal, then go to the dinner, the night before, and a few morning of. Day of photos will have to be in a separate post since I don't have very many of those re-sized to go up on the blog (re-sizing and adding the BEBBlog logo sticker is what takes so long!).

Matthew, the preacher of our wedding, and I going over the order of events before the rehearsal.

The pretty menu telling everything we had for dinner. The roses in the background were waiting to be made into a bouquet. In the very far back you can see the layers of the cake sitting, ready to be decorated.

Autry & I, Matthew, the preacher, and my best friends little brother.

I made matching "hubby" and "wifey" shirts for us. Well, his is a shirt, mine's a sweatshirt. I get a lot colder than he does! We wore these after the wedding on our honeymoon.

We had a beautiful build-your-own salad bar. You can see all the lovely topping options there including boiled eggs, raisins, bell pepper, croutons, spinach and more!

This is me sneaking a bite of the Tiramisu I made for the wedding. I hadn't tried it and wanted to make sure it  tasted alright. This was my first time to make it all by myself. Back when I worked at the family run Italian restaurant in Oklahoma I watched it being made several times and even was aloud to sprinkle the dark chocolate on top a few times too!

Here is the Tiramisu in all it's glory! I want so badly to make another one!!

These are the Mini Cheesecakes which I'm sure you saw me post about awhile back. They were DELICIOUS as well!

If you haven't noticed, the theme for our rehearsal dinner was Italian foods. We served spaghetti noodles with the choice of red sauce or Alfredo sauce. There were homemade meatballs, buttered toast and freshly grated Parmesan cheese.

Autry & I fixing our plates of food.

Here was my first plate. Of course I had to go back for more!

Later on, after the rehearsal crowd (not that there were a lot of people there lol, just some family and the wedding party) had dispersed I tried on the wedding dress. This dress was found at the local thrift store and I only paid $40 for it! Of course the neckline was MUCH lower than I was comfortable with so I ended up using fabric from the now somewhat famous 0.25 cent wedding dress to fill in the gaps and make it more comfortable.

My dearest best friend Kora working away to get the rest of the wedding dress top finished before the Big Day! She worked so hard to help get our wedding as perfect as could be.

Kora again! This time she is wrapping together the stems of the roses to make my bouquet. I still have it hanging in my bathroom where I left it to dry after the wedding was over. See it here.

The morning of the Big Day. Kora is putting the finishing touches on our beautiful wedding cake! It was an almond cake with tiny bits of almonds in it and was finished off with a butter cream icing!

As I said, Kora did a LOT to help with our wedding. Here she is fixing my hair. I wish I could figure out how to do it up like she did that day. It was so gorgeous!!

Kora & I on the Big Day getting ready to head out to the river!

Well that is what I have together for now! I'll continue working on the Big Day photos, but there are MANY more of those so it will take a bit to finish them up. Hopefully this will help all of you who have asked for photos since now I at least have a few up! :)
