The Survivalist Post #9 | Sensible Stockpiling

Awhile back I was doing some shopping and picked up a few things to stock up. I'm sure many of you know all about stocking up, but if you don't let me tell you it can be quite expensive if you try to 'stock up' all in one day! Building a stock pile of sensible things is never a bad idea. You never know when your stash of toilet paper under the bathroom cabinet will run out, or one day you'll suddenly realize your toothbrush needs to be replaced but you don't have extras. I'm talking about stockpiling every day things.

Stockpiling means something different to everyone. To me it's the difference between having something and running out of it. Clothes pins break, toothbrushes go flat, matches burn, and tampons...well, no explanation needed there. All of those things are something I like to have a lot of on hand because they get used or broken and need to be replaced. The only other thing in this photo that wasn't a usual 'sensible stockpiling' buy are the water purification tablets. I happened to buy those because I FOUND them and sometimes they're hard to find at the store, and I needed them for my BOB.

A quick tip on the Water Purification Tablets, you probably won't be keeping them in their package so make sure to label the tops of the bottles with a sharpie so you'll remember which one to use first.

Okay so back to stockpiling sensible things. I have a running list of things I want to pick up if we have extra money by the time the rest of the shopping is done. I don't always get something from that list, but it's still there. I thought I'd put together a list of sensible things to stockpile.

Sensible Stockpile Items
Toilet Paper
Tooth brushes
Shampoo, Conditioner, Body Wash
Bars of Soap
Laundry detergent
Bleach
Tampons (feminine products)
Matches
Gallons of Water
Dish Soap

What are things you'd stockpile?

The Survivalist Post #8 | 9 Ideas for Prepping from the Blogging World

Hi everyone! :) I have been busy the last few months working on creating a home out of an apartment, see more about Apartment Living here. In the process of this I've come up with a few things to write about for this series. I hope that you will be inspired to come up with a few things for your own families! :)

I thought I would jump back into this series by first sharing a few things from around the blogging world. I really wasn't looking for these posts, they just popped up in different places I happened to be reading and I just had to share them!

#1 Preparing For A Multi-Day Power Outage. A post by Terri @ A Beautiful Little Life Blog.

#2 Junk In The Trunk. A post by Heidi @ The Castro HAPPYnings.

#3 11 Emergency Food Items That Can Last A Lifetime. A post written by Tess @ Ready Nutrition.

#4 Blessing Bags. A post written by Ali @ Kids With A Vision. Although this post is about making blessing bags to keep in your car to give to a homeless person when your out, there are multiple uses for them I'm sure!

#5 Tornado Season Is Here: Tips on Being Prepared. A post by Tracie @ Penny Pinchin' Mom.

#6 Emergency Meal Kit Challenge. A post by Amy @ Homestead Revival. Here Amy challenges people to prepare food boxes for things such as power outages. She shares the Tuna meal and what all is included in that, but has a now-closed link-up where 12 other Emergency Meal Ideas have been shared.

#7 Food Storage For As Little As $5 A Week. A post by Savannah @ Classy Clutter. Ideas on how to build a stockpile of foods while on a budget.

#8 Canned Heat: How to Make An Emergency Heater. A post by Heather @ The Parsimonious Princess. This project takes about $5 to get done and should last a really long time.

#9 Emergency Preparedness Kit {week-by-week}. A post by Stefanie @ Lovely Little Snippets. Ideas on filling a box with emergency supplies.

Well, there are my finds from around the blogging world. Do you have a post you've shared on your blog which relates to the topic of emergency preparedness, prepping, or stockpiling?

The Survivalist Post | Sandy Hook...Was It A Fake?

Okay, so back when all those bloggers were doing the "blogger day of silence for Sandy Hook Elementary" I was like: "What's going on? What happened?" I'm not a person who watches tv, reads the newspaper...or keeps up with most news in general so I really had no clue what was going on. Well, since then I've had friends email me links to different things related to the Sandy Hook shooting and I have to say that I think it was a fake. If you're not sure for yourself, or don't know much about this situation you might find this Youtube video really interesting:

Either way it really has some interesting points in making you think more about some of the recent events that have gone on in terms of shootings/acts of terrorism.

In case you can't view the video here on my blog click this link and it will take you to youtube where you should be able to view the video just fine.

The Survivalist Post #6 | Christmas Prep & Packing Bags

Welcome to a fairly short and unprepared post today! I totally did not prepare anything to write about today so I will be telling you a few things that you might find useful...or not. Enjoy!

Christmas Prep
I don't know about you, but I LOVE Christams! And that is almost exactly a week away from today!!! YAY! Anyway, in order to be less stressed I have been doing a lot of my baking this past week and making up cookie dough and freezing it so all I have to do Sunday or Monday is pull out the dough, pop it on the pan and stick it in the oven! No extra mess, no fuss, still have fresh cookies! Sounds perfect right? Well you can check out how to do that for yourself here!

Not only have I been doing a lot of baking ahead of time, but I've already wrapped all the store bought presents and have most of the homemade gifts made! I even wrote a tutorial for how to wrap beautiful presents here! Are you a last minute gal? I used to be, but not anymore...but in case you are here are a few simple DIY gift ideas which make a lovely present but don't cost a lot and won't take a lot of your time either:

White Chocolate Chip Cookie Bars.
Perfect for the non-baker who wants to have baked treats without the extra work!

Hot Chocolate Mix.
A simple recipe which is a lovely addition to any gift!
Also, see how I've wrapped hot chocolate in packages this year!

Some great ideas which only take a few hours!
There's plenty of time left before Christmas so pick a project out and make one!

Vacation/Travel Prep
I will be going on a short trip, of sorts, to get a few things straightened out with my car wreck case and some other business...I've been preparing things and packing all week. It is so unlike me to be a few days away from leaving and not have everything done! You can be sure it is bugging me. I thought I would share a few tips for packing/preparing for a trip ahead of time:

~make lists! Start days before you leave so you will have plenty of time to think of everything you'll need and so less will be forgotten or left behind when you go!
~open up your suitcase. Start packing the items you can from your list. Scratch them out once their packed and DON'T remove any packed items so your list will be right.
~print out directions/maps for the trip days ahead of time so you can look over everything and make sure you have what you need.
~pack snack foods. Usually these are easy to eat items which don't have to be refrigerated so you can go ahead and pack them up and set them in a pile by your suitcase. The more packing you get done ahead of time the less stress you'll have the day you leave.
~The night before you leave (if you're leaving the next morning, for example) fill up the car with gas, pack everything into the car that you can, and make sure to include a few water bottles & some WalMart sacks for collecting trash!

I'm sure I'll come up with some more helpful tips, but for now this is what I've got! What do you do to prepare for a trip? What things do you pack besides the obvious of clothes & food?

The Survivalist Post #5 | Ziploc & Pepper Spray

Welcome to another great week for the Survivalist Post! I have to update you all and let you know that I now have 5 gallons of water stored in the garage in case the water should go out and we need extra!!! I've been able to keep most of the people in the house from throwing away milk jugs although a few did end up in the trash... Read more about this here!

Ziploc Important Papers!
I wanted to share with you all the idea of storing your birth certificates, social security cards, and other such important papers in a ziploc bag in the place you keep them. For some that may be a filing cabinet, for other's that may be a locked safe...either way: seal those things up so that they are safe from water damage and so that you can quickly grab them in case you have to take them with you. Everything will be in one easy place so you won't have to dig around to find them when you're in a hurry and need to get out the door!

Get Some Fox Pepper Spray!

This may not have occurred to you, but pepper spray is actually a really smart thing to buy and comes in a handy size that's not too big to fit in your purse! I actually have a can in my purse, even though it's not a big purse...and there's plenty of room for everything else I needed. I would suggest carrying this spray with you at all times. I keep mine with me in my purse which is at the very top so I can easily grab it in case of an emergency. If you feel threatened or have a gut feeling that something isn't right about a situation, or you're walking out in the parking lot alone at night to get to your car...have that spray in your hand ready to use! It never hurts to be prepared! The bottle I have was only $15 and totally worth the sense of protection I feel when I'm in an interesting situation.

For example: I was at WalMart last week and an older guy (probably 40s) seemed to be following me everywhere I went. Finally it was time to check out and leave, but then I saw him again...walking out the door and he took a spot on the bench right outside. I had a very uneasy feeling about the situation even though my sister was with me, I wasn't alone, and it wasn't dark outside, but I still didn't feel safe walking out the door. We stood and looked through the Redbox machine for a bit in hopes that he would go along his way, but as I stood there I noticed he was watching each person that came out. This was entirely too creepy for me, and at last I remembered I had my pepper spray. We only had a few baggies in our cart so I told my sister to pick up a few bags, put her purse strap on across her chest (I did the same) and I got my pepper spray out. We then walked out to our car. I checked behind us every few seconds to make sure he didn't move and we left. I don't know that he was a threat, but I also don't know that he wasn't...either way I practiced safety and made sure that nothing happened either way. I don't have gutt feelings very often, but when I do they're usually right. I just thought I'd share this with you since it brings a great point: have something that can protect you in your purse or on your person at all times when you're out!!!

UPDATE ON THE PETITIONS
Well this is probably going to be the last time I mention the petitions in The Surivialst Post for a while...actually next week will be the final week since they will all 'expire' sometime between yesterday and next week. Here are the latest results from the petitions: This South Carolina petition has less than 70 signatures needed to reach the 25,000 goal! Expired December 7th: Louisiana with 37,351 signatures. Expired December 9th: Alabama with 30,534 signatures on it.  North Carolina with 30,735 signatures. Texas expired 119,214 signatures. Mississippi with 18,900+ signatures...this one did not make the goal.

The Survivalist Post #4 | What I Did This Week & Updates

This past week has been very different for me since I am in the process of going off of my newest medicine since it is not working well with my body. Because of that I was in bed four of the past seven days so therefore I didn't get much done on any level and all my prewritten posts ran out...thus the reason this post is being published in the late AM's.

At one point last week I did go to the store with Autry so I picked up a gallon of Distilled White Vinegar and two more boxes of Baking Soda to have on hand. In the first post of this series I bought four boxes...two were stored in double ziploc baggies and put in my BOB, one was used to make homemade shampoo and the rest of that box and the fourth box were left in storage. Now I have a total of 3 full boxes of baking soda.

LAST WEEK:
In case you missed it, last week I shared 5 Easy Things You Can Do To Prepare For Winter months. You should definitely head over and check that out. Also, I finally got the 60+ General Things For Your BOB post written and published. If you haven't looked over any lists yet, check that one out post out too.

Latest results on the petitions: As I wrote about in post #2 of this series, I have been keeping an eye on the petitions that are up for states to secede the union. As of last week only 5 had reached the goal of 25,000 signatures or more. Others were close, but haven't reached goal yet. I am now going to give you the update from this past weeks' numbers: Because the petitions have to reach the goal of 25,000+ by December 9, 10, 11, 12, or 13, I went ahead and added that next to each petition as I updated the numbers from this week. If you've considered signing a petition, but haven't yet...your time is running out! South Carolina's petition is about to go over! It is sitting at 24,655 signatures right now. Other than that there was not a huge jump in numbers. Several other petitions are close, but they still have 4-5 thousand more signatures needed.

The Survivalist Post #3 | 5 Things You Can Do To Prep For Winter

So today I am going to focus on a few things you can do to get yourselves a little more prepared this week than you were last week. Personally, I was really too busy with Thanksgiving and baking all those sweets to focus on much else, but now that the Holiday of Thanks is over it is time to move along and get back on track.

I'm going to share 5 easy things with you that are no cost or low cost that you can do right now (today!) to be more prepared for the future, whatever it may bring. Since we are heading towards December these will be fairly easy things, but still something that many may not think about.

(photo via Life Hackery)

#1 Start Saving Milk Jugs!
Okay, so you're going to ask why...well I'm telling you why: if you're like this family here we go through a few gallon jugs each week...that's at least two gallons which can be saved, washed and filled with water to be stored in case of emergency. This is pretty much no cost and is a really smart thing to do when considering the fact that a storm may come and knock your power out and you may want water to flush toilets, wash hands, etc. I really wouldn't suggest drinking this water, but it has plenty of other good uses!

This is one of my favorite crochet blankets. It is very nice and warm. I have it stored in a clean trash bag so it will keep dust and dirt off it and so it can be stored anywhere in the car without a problem!

#2 Put Blankets In Your Car!
This is another no cost thing. We have TONS of extra blankets piled in a spare closet...all that you have to do is take a few out, store them in a clean trash bag and stuff them under a seat or in your trunk. You're probably wondering why, but have you considered the possibility that your car may break down in the middle of nowhere during the cold winter months? Yes one person may go to get help, but the rest of you could very well freeze to death if you don't have something to help keep you warm until that help arrives. (This is all depending on the situation of course!) So, blankets in the car = no cost, go do it!

#3 Save Those Toilet Paper Rolls!
Okay, this may be something that not everyone really needs to do, but if you have a fire place you should totally start saving the toilet paper rolls instead of throwing them away! Not only that, you should save your dryer lint as well to stuff inside them. I've heard this makes excellent fire starter and who can't use a little help with that in the winter months? (This idea was found via The Green Wife.)

#4 Add More Soups To The Menu!
This may seem odd, but adding soups is a smart idea since they are warm and can be really healthy and keep you and your kids/family healthy too. I attempted to post some of our favorite soup recipes here on my blog but only got a few out which you are more than welcome to visit: Button Up Chili, Loaded Baked Potato Soup. Hopefully I'll be able to post up the four I have in drafts which are also pretty tasty! If you don't have any favorites of your own you can always do a Pinterest search and find plenty of ideas, including crockpot versions for busy days!

I have this photo because it has the light and batteries, I don't know anything about the brand. :)

#5 Make Sure You Have Working Flashlights!
Check your batteries, and be sure you have an extra set or two on hand so that you won't be surprised in a power outage with no source of light! This would not be a fun thing at all to deal with! I myself am still on the hunt of a 'perfect' flashlight, but needless to say I am speeding up my search and will be making a decision soon!

What are your ideas for preparing for the cold winter months? What have you done and what are you doing?

LAST WEEK
Also, if you were interested in last weeks The Survivalist Post #2: States To Secede, A Week Long Study be sure to check back in as I have updated the numbers as to what was current as of yesterday evening! If you were following along last week I was basically showing the difference between numbers of signautes added to different petitions throughout the week. I also shared which petitions reached the goal of 25,000+ signatures. In updating the numbers most states added anywhere from 300-600 signatures through out this past week to their individual petitions. Other than the six states currently over the 25,000 signature mark, no other states have passed it this week although Indiana, Colorado, Arkansas, and Arizona have more than 20,000 signatures, or more, already.

The Survivalist Post #2 | States to Secede, A Week Long Study

Happy Monday everyone!! For those who may be new to my blog, this is a once a week series in which I share my thoughts on politics, survivalist things, and prepping! I only post about these things on Monday so as not to put a damper on the other fun things I love to blog about throughout the week! :)

Just last Monday I was reading through my email and I saw where The Survivalist Blog had shared an interesting tidbit on the post Monday Miscellany. The White House website now has secession petitions from 20 states. Before last Monday I knew nothing about all of the other states. I knew about Texas, but was quite surprised by some of the others...not saying that this is a bad thing though. I think it is a great thing that these people do realize that things are not right and need to be taken care of.

(photo via Politico, editing by me)
The map I created on November 12, 2012

Day 1: November 12th. I decided to create a map to compare the difference between the election results and the petitions to secede and what states they were coming from. As of this point I was only aware of 22 states with petitions (some with multiple petitions turned in, see below).

All the additions...by November 13th 2012! Wow, just in one day practical all of the states had turned in a petition, and every RED state for sure had a petition in!

Day 2: November 13th. As you can see, in just one day HUGE difference in the two maps above. Now there is a total of 40 states who have turned on petitions to seceded. Over half of the current petitions from yesterday have tripled in numbers of signatures. 5 have reached the goal of 25,000 signatures (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas). Many new petitions were added, some states now have multiple petitions running now where they didn't before.

Day 3: November 14th. Finally! A petition to Impeach Obama has been created...actually the date says it was created on November 11th, but I just ran across it today...I honestly feel this would be a lot easier on everyone than states seceding from the United States. It currently has 9,185 signatures. States added to the Hawaii, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, VirginiaWashington. The completed petitions (they reached the goal of 25,000 signatures or more) now have a minimum of 2,000-7,000 more signatures depending on which one I looked at. I checked all the other petitions and the number jumps were HUGE! Anywhere from 1,000-10,000 signatures or more on most of them! States to reach goal today: North Carolina, Tennessee.

Day 4: November 15th. Four days into this study. I'm getting ready to start looking at results of what all the petitions look like now. The petition for Obama to be impeached went from 9,185 to 25,647 signatures in ONE day! Wow! Texas' petition hit over 109,000 signatures! The other finished petitions added over 2,000 new signatures since yesterday. Most of the petitions which were not completed also added 2,000 or more signatures since yesterday. The petition with the least difference in signatures added today was North Dakota's. No new states petitions to pass the 25,000 signature mark today. I did find a few more petitions however: Connecticut, Maryland, Vermont

Day 5: November 16th. According to this article on The Blaze, the individual states no longer have a right to secede from the union. I don't know if this is true or not, but reading through this was interesting. On to today's count...I wonder what new things I will discover today. I think there's a possibility for 5 of the petitions to hit target or beyond at the rate signatures have been piling on. Let's see if I'm right. Well so far signatures are at a low of 50 and a high of 800 being a normal adding rate. Well I was surprised that none reached goal. It seems that signing petitions has slowed down quite a bit since yesterday. Now to look at those which have passed goal to see how much they've grown! The Texas petition went from 109,000+ to 112,000+ overnight! The others gained 1,000+ signatures each.

Day 6: November 17th. Just checking numbers today...I haven't seen anything interesting otherwise. Average adding signatures 120-300 signatures; much lower than even yesterday's signature rates. The only petition past 25,000 to add even more signatures than a small amount was the Texas petition; another thousand was added overnight; now it is over 113,000. The petition for Obama to be impeached gained over 2,000 signatures since yesterday. The petition to recount the election gained another thousand signatures since yesterday. I did find a petition which is Do NOT Reinstate the Federal "Assault Weapons Ban" of 1994. It currently has almost 6,000 signatures on it. Petition requiring a government issued photo I.D. to Vote. 5,314 signatures so far.

Day 7: November 18th. Well, today is the last day I will be doing this update on a daily basis. I will be checking these numbers at least once a week and will be keeping them fairly up to date here on my blog so by each Monday (that's my plat at least). The Assault Weapons petition gained over 2,000 signatures since yesterday, that's a good sign. Both the Florida and Texas petitions added another 1,000 signatures since yesterday. They have already reached the goal of 25,000. The others had much smaller gains. As for the petitions not yet to reach goal, they gained anywhere from 50-300 new signatures since yesterday. Indian had the most gains today with over 400 signatures putting it at 21,000+ so it is getting close to reaching the mark! Arizona also gained over 400 signatures as well.

Before You Continue On, Please Read!
As I said in Day 7, I plan to keep up with these petitions I have listed below. I will try and update them at least by Monday of each week so that they are fairly current. I think it is really interesting and our country is for sure going through a difficult time. This is a full and complete list of the petitions to secede for the 50 states. That is as of 11/19/2012. There are more than 50 petitions however, so I've tried to link each one that I could find. I may find more or be informed of more after that and then I'll make sure to link them up as well. This was a study purely to pass time and see the results of other people's interest in the petitions and to see how popular they were/are. Please be respectful of my blog and my readers if you do leave me a comment. Thank you!

PETITIONS

Now...If you are like me and found this interesting and don't like the way things are you may want to sign the petition for your state. If so here are the links for the states which have submitted petitions thus far....but before you sign a petition for ANY state you should contact the state's representative or governor to be sure this is something that the state actually wants. According to this article Rick Perry, Governor of Texas, says that he never said anything about seceding from the US. He does say this though: "When we came into the nation in 1845, we were a republic, we were a stand-alone nation, and one of the deals was, we can leave anytime we want. So we’re kind of thinking about that again."

For each state listed the time to sign is by December 10, 2012.

I had to search for the Texas petition since it was already completed and in that search I found the website United State of Texas. This link takes you to a petition for the state of Texas to secede from the United States and "from a more perfect union" which would be called The Republic of Texas. Eligible petitioners are voters in the United States who desire to become citizens of the Republic of Texas and voters who are Citizens of the State of Texas.

The Survivalist Post #1 | Introduction To This Series

As many of you readers know, and some of you are about to find out, I am a Survivalist! I'm actually fairly new to all of this stuff...and have SO much to learn and do to actually be prepared for different situations. My main concern is the fact that Obama is going to remain president and will therefore pose a continuing threat to people like me who like our freedom of speech, the right to bear arms (own guns...INCLUDING guns that hold more than 10 rounds thank you!), and keeping our money in our OWN pockets!!!

I may be new to the world of prepping, but that world is not new to me! I have been around it for a while so I have a lot of information to draw from already! I have been able to put together the best BOB that I can for now, and little by little Autry & I will buy something to add to our bag to make it better. Here is a list of 60+ General Things For Your BOB to get you started. If you are interested in reading how I got into all of this then here is the post you should start with!

For over two months now I have been following The Survivalist Blog via email. I've greatly enjoyed the information I've had time to read (there is SO much I have yet to read that I save in a separate folder for when I have spare time!!). This is the one and only blog I've really kept up with as far as information sources go. I do follow other Survivalist blogs which you can find on my Survivalist page!

One thing which is discussed often on The Survivalist Blog is the fact that prepping is a weekly thing: Something you should be doing all the time, not something you should rush out and do once and spend a bunch of money on. I know that Autry & I have found it much easier and a whole lot less stressful to write out a list of things we would like to have/prep and then slowly buy things to check off that list. As an encouragement to readers, and myself, I am going to start sharing updates each Monday with you all on how our Prepping is going!

Everything we do isn't about spending money either!!! Sometimes there are things on our lists that we have to research and figure out where to buy the item, or when we find where to buy it...which one we want. For example we need to find a good solid knife with a full blade which runs all the way to the end of the handle....this is something that I've been looking for and have yet to find. I've looked for over a month now, but have had no luck as of yet. Some things will just take time, and that is why it is necessary to prep by week, and not all at once!

I am working on putting up the post of what all I currently have in my BOB, but it has over 60 items in just the BOB itself (and it's not even full!!) and that doesn't include some of the really important stuff which we're still working on purchasing! I really do hope to have that post/list up by the end of this month though so I'll be working away on that really hard the next few weeks!

Today I will share with you what we did last week to prep! I have more of a mental list, and random sticky notes all over the place with different things on it that I need for our BOB and Prepping...I wanted to stop at WalMart and check the prices on several items before I decided what exactly I would buy, but we didn't find some of those things which means we will have to continue the search elsewhere.

Last week we were pricing or purchasing:
~Lighters
Up at the registers I found the pack of 7 for $1.97!
~Small LED Flashlight
We priced these. I want a Coleman. It's about $19. See below for similar picture.
~550 lb. Paracord 100 ft.
We didn't actually have time to look for or ask about this.
~Water purification tablets
None to be found. We looked in the hunting & camping departments. This WalMart does not sell it apparently, so well will have to look elsewhere...
~Packages of spam, chicken, or tuna
We decided to wait on these, but I do want to add some protein to our BOB.
~Knives
We priced these. Both of us want different knives. I don't remember the details about mine very well, but see below for details about the one Autry would like to get.

Here are the things we purchased last week for our BOB & Prepping!
Emergency Blankets found in the Camping Department. $3 each
Lighters found at the Registers. $2
4 Boxes of Baking Soda. $0.54 each
There are a TON of uses for baking soda, but that is for another post!

This Coleman flashlight is similar to the one I want to get.

Gerber Bear Grylls Paracord Fixed Blade Knife. This one cost about $25. Autry likes this one. I didn't like it because it didn't have a solid handle...I do like that it had the paracord around the handle, but I would much rather a solid handle to the paracord if I'm gonna spend money on a knife.

I didn't find a picture of the knife I wanted, but it was really nice and only around $30 which really isn't bad at all. It had a solid blade all the way through the handle which is an important thing to look for in a knife. I do hope to get that knife or one similar soon!

Anyway, I hope you've enjoyed this post! I almost feel as excited as I did the day I declared myself a Survivalist!!! It's an excited feeling. Kind of an adrenaline rush I suppose...possibly like those that people get on roller coasters, only I wouldn't know cuz I've never been on one. :)
